We get up and film kids. Much excitement!! LOADS of toys. Santa went a bit nuts. He knew where to put stuff as Fionn put new clothes for Kate on the couch and new clothes for Daire on chair. Kate got black baby born, pink leap pad book, russian dolls, little figures. Daire got cowboy guns and hat, jump ahead computer edu-game. Books too. Dr Seuss Fox in Socks + The cat in the Hat + Green Eggs and Ham + .. Furry Nutcracker book for Kate.
It's wet and not too cold out. No way I think is there going to be snow.
Christmas dinner. I'm not too hungry :( I chop sprouts and put on potatoes and stuff. Dish up. I have a small amount. All limbs sore. Fionn gets kids their new pyjamas and we bring them to bed. It's a bit late ... after a while Daire still awake worried can't sleep but we reassure him. We get stuff down from the attic "bags for the trip to Cobh & Limerick". Lots of bumping and rustling. Leave carrot and mince pie and glass of ? for Santa and reindeer.
My stomach is cramped. I don't sleep until Fionn gives me rennie at 4.
Bag heavy. Cycle via sandyford. Down footpath in Wedgewood. Back gate open. good. Park bike. Meet Fionn. Sit beside Sarah? Conor Boyle's Mom. The Wonderful Wizzard of Oz. Daire is a munchkin. I take photos. Fionn takes photos. Daire has lines at the start :) David is the gatekeeper of the city of Oz. Excellent as leather coated "go away" threatening guy.

all your base is belong to us that has come up a bit lately
Less busy in work. Friday release of smsengine does all needed. So reading cpan2rpm, reading perl lib/cpan stuff.
I leg it to get lunch 15:00 and catch Daire's concert too. It's COLD and school is locked when we arrive. Threatening to rain. A lady - Aisling's mum ?sp?jeez?Ailis with 3yrold trying to get in too. She has a 19yr old too. Get in fire exit and wait where concert is being practiced. Fionn comes with Kate. Kate is beaming happy to see us. Recorders and violins in concert. Daire has been practising hot cross buns lots.
lots of cpan and rpming
home before 6! yay. Kids having mince & bean stuff with pasta. I chomp some food. Salmon steaks grilled with sugar snap pea and mushroom and nut salad. Then shower. As I shower Kate comes in and lays down towels and mops up water leaking onto floor. Fionn is wrapping presents and stuff. I head to get babysitter Ruth. Bring kate in her warm pyjama jump suit and a blanket. When we get back Kate upstairs and I speed read her the gingerbread man. We take too long downstairs going ... put presents into boot. Kate crys lots. Fionn and then I up and then lets GO!
Drop presents in Eoin & Mary's house in Stillorgan first. Mary's sister is there. Then on to Mary's soiree. Yummy yummy mulled wine and lots of tasty bits. Chat to people.
Home 12:15. Fionn gives Ruth a lift home. I grab food to eat - salmon sandwich. Fionn home, makes tea. I'm considering sushi or hummus. Hummus wins. I had put chick peas to soak earlier. Fionn says "breadmaker" and points me at sun dried tomato bread recipie. Fionn sets up the breadmaker machine timer. So I collect stuff and put the bread mix together. It's after 1 by time I'm going to bed. I also find clothes to hang out in washing machine.
I head shopping. Kate likes the idea ... so, Hmmm. Thinking of just telling Daire to tell Fionn Kate gone with Daddy! eek :) Kate promises to be really good. We talk to Fionn. Say bye bye. I stow emergency fruit & chocolate in coat. We head away in car. OOP! White's cross has changed. I turn right unintentionally. We go to Deansgrange. Left turn traffic is backed up. Get to Blackrock. Frascati park lane backed up so we go across road. Easy to get parking. We get the buggy and bags out. First thing get nice smelly stuff for Fionn. Look in bookshop. Kate wriggling buggy. Next nuts and apricots and herbal teas. Look in bewlies. Then across road. Get milk frother. Tall measuring jugs for our kitchen. No suitable knife blocks. Kate likes plastic jug and sitting moving buggy in shop. Back across road. Get cafeteria in bewlies. And freshly ground coffee. Put stuff in car and get a trolley. Then grab bread & ham and milk in Superquinn ..... and some fruit (pineapple!, bananas, apples, oranges, pears, plums) and some veg (brocolli and potatoes and tomatoes), eggs, yoghurt, wine, tuna and salmon (thinking maybe sushi for doolin food), and looroll. Kate eats lots of a baguette in shop. Put stuff in car. Kate & I take a break for a picnic of fruit (bananas) and some chocolate). Get buggy out again. We trundle to blackrock market. Look at pretty stuff. Dream catcher and ogre face for Mum for garden maybe near pond. Spend long time looking at jewelry for Fionn. Shop where you pick out each bead for bracelet or necklace. Kate loves all the beads. Make plan for our bracelet. We hold her and count beads into boxes. Long time spent picking out stuff. Get kit. Then we find two piano stools! One looks older a little nicer perhaps but broken, very rickety. Another quite sturdy. Recover cushion would be lovely I think. We buy it for 50 euros. Head away pushing buggy and stool under arm. Back along road - we see pears spilled. Back to car. home! Kate has been very good! And we have taken it easy enough.
I cook out of date eggses (nuke em) and black pudding left over in fridge. Eat with turnips and potatoes. Fionn cooked burgers and beans for themselves earlier. Kate likes beans and burger. Daire playing computer all day with Conor. Fionn cooks nice sane omlette for herself and Daire and Kate ... & I help finish it :)
Bedtime for kids. I show Fionn purchases. Sneak hers behind tree. When she is in bed reading I make sounds like turning off computer and putting clothes away while really sneaking the piano stool into cupboard in our room! heh heh heh >;) Read. (Brian Aldiss - Titan) Bed. Wow! bed not too late AGAIN!
Daire & Fionn come home. We have cappuchinos, Kate has hot choc, Conor visits Daire. Daire has hot choc a bit after. We have lunch various snacks. Fionn heads off to Liffey valley shopping. Conor and Daire play with tank and cars and wrecking ball and books falling off set of drawers. Loads on computer later. Kate & I a bit stir crazy but not too much.
Fionn home. Fionn cooks potatoes and turnips and pizza. I finish up cooking dinner mash potatoes and turnips and dish up food & drinks. After food relax. Kids to bed. Stories.
I'm dying to have at computer and try fix sound properly. I resist. Fionn's got presents for my family too. Yay. Fionn sorts and I wrap and Fionn labels. Bed early! Before 12.

All day in work I'm packing up smsengine release. Making docs nice. Service script, release notes, perl libs. Split out FileQueue copy hack hack perl libs Malefile.PL, MANIFEST, ... cpan reading. work work work test test test All working bakunin. Happy. test install on chomsky goes slow. adding perl libs. install of POE and all dependancies takes a while. release made 20:00 ish. Stella in doing releases too. javascript select box thing. Home after 21:00. Fionn cross. I feed myself. Talk. Better. BEd.
Home. Food. Hello kids. Hello Fionn!
Drive to Tallaght after writing lists for a while. ARGH! In toward square but get completely lost. Fail to find Smyths. After while find it and it WAS right where I drove in only now behind under-construction-covered-in-plastic car park. right. Scoot around. Scoot more. Scoot calmly. Store very big. Lots of toys. Find each slowly. buy buy buy! Back into car. Drive around and find "the square" urgh. In we go. 20:30. Stuff shutting Up. Scoot around and don't find much. Grand like, but. Buy bread & milk for kids school lunches and breakfast.
Drive. Towards town. Haven't clue where I am. Take a likely leftish then right. End up coming in Wexford St. Awkward swosh left off Geroge's St. across by Drury St, left onto Stephen's Green, eek! going different way. right. Down towards Pearse St. Left right by Mulligans. Parking space. Whee! Phone home. Into pub. Mmm. coke. phew! Very crowded and very pushy people make space oohhh. Talk talk. More coke. Out we go and home. Gah :( wrong gun :( Pink other think. But alright. Do stuff. Intend going to bed but get sucked in. BED!
Leop roundabout is blocking-backing up traffic. Lots of gardai around watching traffic this morning (and these weeks). Drop kids by Luas stop. Gate locked but David goes very slow wants to try it. Ohhhh. Anyway. Very slow. Once nearly round bushes I go. Kate realises she has no shoes. Happy though. We say "oohhh no. no shoes for Kate. No coat either!". Get her dressed in car. In we go. Bye bye. She's quite pleased. I get bike. Unlock. Raise saddle. Cycle cycle. Have to stop at roundabout. But traffic gap right then so go easy courier on my right.

got same modem to work this week - Suse - driver from Intel ( post #2) Hullo, Your modem and problem sound exactly like mine. I got the very same driver and had make problems BUT ... I can fix them. yay me! Got modem working ... but had to do a couple of things first. I did see around stuff on web about ?slmodem? ohhh something else? Hmm. I can't remember name now. Or another non intel driver that might work ... An open source one more generic so would be preferable. But I saw it after I got the intel one working. As this one works for me I'm not going to check it out (for now). The makefile is silly. If the files do not exist ... the diff result is blank. Yep. Makefile thinks the diff has matches succesfully and carries on. diff: /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h: No such file or directory autoconf.h matches running kernel diff: /boot/vmlinuz.version.h: No such file or directory version.h matches running kernel Those files were not there for me either. To fix this I went looking for them. locate autoconf.h locate version.h |grep linux You will find a good few version.h files but you want the one that applies to your kernel. e.g. (different machine than at home - redhat 9.1) your kernel versions will probably be different /usr/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.3/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/arch/i386/math-emu/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/aep/driver_version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/cipe/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/iscsi/iscsi-version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/iscsi/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/qla2200/qla_version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/net/sk98lin/h/skversion.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/pcmcia/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.3/include/linux/version.h which one? The one for your kernel: maybe /usr/include/linux/autoconf.h (take a look inside) better maybe to go for one exactly matching kernel /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h As root copy them to where makefile wants them: cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h /boot/vmlinuz.version.h _now_ try the make again. and make install. I had lots of warnings in the make - don't like seeing warnings. They are our friends BUT they are our friends as developers and we should make sure to explicitly allow them or remove them. But build was good. Now the modem was working. Test using dial up, test using minicom, however you want. BUT ... next time I restarted the computer the modem service failed to start. It was not installed as a service on any runlevel. Or at least ... I saw it but not sure exactly. Was trying to start before any other service? Can start the service manually after every restart like this: /etc/init.d/537_boot start (as root) but that would be a pain So .... need to do more fixing. As root edit script /etc/init.d/537_boot which was installed as the service start script for the soft modem. (NOTE: maybe your installer did work? check out does modem still work after reboot? script name could maybe be different) I changes all calls to lsmod, depmod, rmmod .... to use full path i.e. /sbin/lsmod /sbin/depmod etc That's just because I'm fussy. Add in following lines near top of script: # chkconfig: 2345 # description: hugely bloated but working intel 537 softmodem driver # processname: 537_boot Then install script to start at these runlevels (2,3,4 and 5) (runlevel 3 would do but ... not worried about others) as root: /sbin/chkconfig --add 537_boot /sbin/chkconfig --list 537_boot Okay. Hope it works for you. I'll check back maybe see if it all went horribly wrong :-7 A couple of comments: Errors in make and service scripts are a little tricky but pretty basic. Should always put full path in root commands called from service scripts otherwise scripts fail for non root and sudo users. e.g. /sbin/lsmod and /sbin/depmod ... instead of just lsmod and depmod ... The module being loaded into the kernel is ... 6 MEGABYTES!! AIE! But it seems grand and works beautifully, seems stable. Now, hmmm, that I've written all this up where could we log bugs/fixes with intel?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umami http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Hardware http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers.htm ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/6806/ENG/readme.txt http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/products/537ep.htm
vbm.linux@intel.com 587ep modem driver install report (with suse 9.1) Hello there, I got a new pc very recently (dell dimension 4600 base) and installed Suse 9.1. Modem didn't install automagically. Through grepping web I found your driver. ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/6806/ENG/readme.txt http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=81&strTypes=DRV&ProductID=1230&OSFullName=SuSE*+Linux&submit=Go%21 Thank you for that. I got the modem working BUT had to do a couple of awkward things. You might like to know of them as if you're making changes they may make other users experience more smooth? I also posted this info to someone on http://www.linuxquestions.org with exactly the same issues as I had but without the knowledge to overcome them. 1. makefile and version.h/autoconf.h get this on "make": diff: /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h: No such file or directory autoconf.h matches running kernel diff: /boot/vmlinuz.version.h: No such file or directory version.h matches running kernel If the files do not exist ... the diff result is blank. Yep. Makefile thinks the diff has matched succesfully and carries on. To fix this I went looking for them. cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h /boot/vmlinuz.version.h 2. service script 537_boot After make install the modem was working. BUT ... next time I restarted the computer the modem service failed to start. It was not installed as a service on any runlevel. Or at least ... I saw it but not sure exactly. Was trying to start before any other service? So .... 2.1 full path to root utilities I changed all calls to lsmod, depmod, rmmod .... to use full path i.e. /sbin/lsmod /sbin/depmod etc In service scripts I think this is general practice. Non root users won't have privs to insmod or depmod anyway. Does allow non root users to query modem status. Allows sudo users to start/stop scripts too. 2.2 install service for runlevels something was installed - not exactly sure what as it seemed to start before any other service. A bit weird. I added in following lines near top of script: # chkconfig: 2345 # description: huge but working intel 537ep softmodem driver # processname: 537_boot Then install script to start at these runlevels (2,3,4 and 5) (runlevel 3 would do but ... not worried about others) as root: /sbin/chkconfig --add 537_boot /sbin/chkconfig --list 537_boot Okay. That's it. The module being loaded into the kernel is ... 6 MEGABYTES!! My graphics module is just 2MEG. I'm going to take a look at that sometime with all my copious amounts of free time. It has worked for me and doesn't seem to cause problems. James.
I go down first. Kate putting on her shoes by herself. One weetabix for Daire - and another after a bit. Kate cross over porridge in bowl. Cross rotating and wailing on kitchen floor so I can't understand her. Porridge into my bowl. So we get her to tell us. Milk in first. Raisins we add after.
Make kids lunches. It's late. 5 to 9. I start eating my breakfast. Daire heads down for David & Joey. Kate has some of my food. Plays singing snowman. Boys come after a bit. Joey first. With crackers. drive drive drive school drive Kate creche see Orla and Joanne. cycle cycle work. Ger's in. Waider comes. Coffee. Diary.
And here we are. Must put some of Bill's music up.
Someone on xchat has set topic to Winston's travel journal - Mexico Winston's web page winstonralph.com doesn't work?
No emails still from ESAT/BT broadband. Or from scan.co.uk. I go home lunchtime. Get query number for scan. Find esat/bt account name 37greeneagles in book (spend ages looking for it on BOTH computers - I did it at 4am some morning - didn't record it electronically?) Noodles slurp. Back to work.
One bounce/failure to xiam people. Reading loads on CPAN and packing up bundles of perl libs.
Fionn calls 17:30ish I head home 18:00. Kids not appreciating chicken casserole at home. Daire has eeuw face on. Kate cross. Wants clean chicken. Get clean plate for Kate. Pick out chicken, carrot and potato. Daire eats chicken. Fionn up for rest. Then Daire gets out frozen fruit and two muller rices. I microwave them. Daire eats his strawberry one. Kate eats half. I get other half. They put on little robot on computer. Quick kitchen tidy. Fionn doesn't tidy as she cooks. There isn't a bit of free counter space to put stuff down on!
I watch little robots with kids too. Then do violin with Daire. Hot cross buns. For school concert. Plays with cd and without. Rythm is tricky to get. Kate shouts at us for attention - she's doing TuxPaint. Likes butterflies. Fionn comes down.
Time for bed for kids. Daire up. Kate up but cross. Stories for Kate in our bed. Read Wind in the Willows Toad does a deal with gypsy horse for money and stew. Kate comes into her bed while read that story. Asleep by time 6 pages are over.
Fionn heads off to Dunnes to do shopping. I finish kitchen tidy, Computer. LOADS of poking at drivers, cute that suse uses service script to do the insmods and lsmods of the kernel modules as a service. Configure loads of stuff. Nothing working. Then .... PLUG THE SPEAKERS INTO DIFFERENT SOUND OUT!!!!!! Ahem. Right. Lovely.
When Fionn comes back I show her cute TuxRacer. Play Bill's music. Fionn collects ironing for Tracy. Take dryish clothes down clothes horse. Hang up clothes from washing machine. I enjoy computer making noise a little bit more. Then up bed. Candle lighting. Read Stephen Baxter Titan (just started after finishing David Brin's uplift crew of fens and men hiding on water - metallic planet).
It's not until 4 that we leave house to go to Naomh Olaf's GAA club. A few trees left scattered round. Kate falls fast asleep in car on trip down. Hold up various trees. I quite like maybe five. Very good growth. Nice trees. One different one - variety. 30 euros but goes to GAA club. Hopefully not too much towards guinness and more towards hurlies. Persuade Fionn and Daire - Fionn is thinking the ones left are the rejects. Hmm. No ties in car. Fold down seat, they put tree gently in and we drive away boot wide open. Drop Daire & Fionn in Atlantic homecare. I take tree and sleepy Kate home. Put stand on tree, tree inside. Grab shopping bags. Kate still asleep. Check for plumber's tape. Nope. None. I was wrong. Must be me thinking about tape in Cobh. Go get petrol on way back. Park. Find Daire, tell him I'm here. Back to Kate. Park much closer to entrance when some cars go away. Then in again. They're at checkout. Tell Fionn plumber's tape. Then I pay for stuff and carry it to car with Daire.
Home. Kate wakes. Kate loo! In we go. OHHH a tree! Kate loo! Back down much excitement. Straighten tree, metal stand bending a bit I think. Carry armchair up to our room. Tree in place, straight. Lights on and kids and Fionn get lots more stuff on it. Fionn cooks omlette, potatoes, egg & rice for kids before. Assumpta calls in. Brings Kate to see their tree. I hang outdoor lights on thorny bush. THIS year I use thick gloves & coat. Much less ow. Looks very lines of lights first, up & down them and attach to branches. Pretty.
I turn off water in attic by tying up stop-cock. flush various loos trying to make sure water is off at right source.
Family back from next door. With popcorn. Up to bed we go, pyjamas, bathroom, stories for Kate.
Tools out ready to try fix leaky pipe in loo. (Fionn has been mopping up and diagnosing problem for last week.) Fionn is right about water mains being under sink. Take stuff out of the way and turn that off. Drain water out sink and loos. Half watching TV with Fionn at same time.
Kate is out of bed wanting to go to loo. She can't as the top of the cistern is on the toilet seat! I help her. Back to bed. Ours or hers I forget. These days she is shifting herself into her bed or going to sleep in it. But throwing duvet away.
Take stopcock off and pipe apart. The leak is on interface between plastic & copper. A wad of plumbers tape brown comes out. I wrap all back up - light amount of tape - awkward as plastic fittings will only be gripped by our big green bitey pliers yoke. First try turn water back on attic and mains. But it leaks faster!! Turn water off again. Little bit of TV with Fionn while water drains. Then put LOADS of tape around plastic thing. Then oops. Have to twist plastic nutty yoke on so twist more tape round when it is attached on loo. Put all back together. Water on. Seems better. No leaks I can see. Does a loud resonant harmonic plumbing tone. Turn on other water and mess with pipe and tone stops ... by itself? OR air gone from pipe? Mop up. Put stuff back tidy in bathrooms. Tidy kitchen. Tidy tools.
Kids playing loads of computer. Daire discovered by himself rebooting and grub choosing between windows and linux. Discovering games on linux (suse 9.1) I hadn't seen yet. Kate likes Jump Ahead toddlers, also both like TuxPaint.
We go to Kilcoole - to Glenroe open farm. Fly past exit ... go good way past. Oh. Turn round & find it. Crib with sheep, cow and donkey in stable. I like animals. Go back to car to fetch camera. Lose others for a bit. Then animal meeting. Gerbils, rabbits, mouse. Goats. Horses. Reindeer. Some of them fancy coat. Geese. Pig is asleep. Then playground. Kate gets on swing horse thing. And stays there for ages. It gets dark and via wash hands we go wait for santa claus in front of video. Shortly we meet him, Kate is shy but chats after a bit. Daire is very good. Get presents. Then Daire & Fionn in shop. Home we go - Delgany? oops via Bray.
I put on Duck. Carrots underneath. Roasting. Rice on to boil. Bill calls. Onion + pine nuts + seeds on top of duck. Mix it a few times. Feed kids rice first. Kate eats solidly for 20 mins before we all sit down. Eats with us. Daire likes duck. Has lots. Kate likes duck. Has less than Daire but chew her bones & Bill's bones. Yum. After tea kids up to bed. I read Kate stories, settle her. Daire story? Last half of chapter where Ratty has met the seafaring rat and when Mole rescues him from the spell.
TV. Dunno what is on. Bill heads after a bit. Later I get modem working. ?Silicon Integrated?Broadcom?dunno Intel 537EP AC'97 Modem Controller (56k Winmodem) Not impressed with intel's makefile. Does a diff and blank match so thought it was successful but /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h didn't exist nor did /boot/vmlinuz.version.h I found likely candidates and put them in. Then build has warnings. I don't like warnings. They are your friends! Then install does okay. But only as root with environment (su - like). depmod and insmod not found otherwise. /dev/modem created. Yes. Yay. Minicom AT get's answered. YAY. BUT for all that modem works grand, suse nice intuitive modem icon, can look at logfiles right-click
Dialing up checking various stuff and message to scan about return of display and get another. Run yast2 video - or actually you. Wow! Full online package updater. Find nVidia. Download all 6MEG of it. Accept licence. heh. Watch tv with fionn while that gets there. YOU/yast install that and reboot? very windowsy. Could probably stop and restart services and modules but reboot would actually be easier. THEN ... I test 3D games ... until 4am!!!! TuxRacer is LOVELY ohh I love it. (Pingus I loved yesterday - still do - showed Daire & Conor - they're playing old old pc lemmings too at the moment). Racer and another 3D thing seem really intended for network play. Flight sim fun. TO.. something car racer again, VERY tricky to control car but fun having computer opposition. Other games Malestrom, ... Beautiful stuff.
Try do some sound stuff but ... ? puzzled. Sound modules all seem okay and happy and working. No sound though. Too quiet :( Fionn phones! Augh! Run up to bed. Unghk.
Computer dial up with windows. Find intel place driverguide.com register download modem driver for linux ... hopefully. Download stuff for sound. Download nVidia docs though says yast2/you whould be able to do it by itself. (once the modem works in linux!)

I'm tempted by fast-food. All shut. home. food. sandwich made by fionn for adults. Fionn does fast savoury mince with beans & potatoes.
In afternoon we go visit Aedin. house lots of work done - stairs moved completely kids sleep in car Paul puts on coffee mostly. Kids in - they wake. Lots of snacks. Chipsticks Kate likes. Tortillas & salsa. Chocolate & custard-cream biscuits. Coffee and apple juice.
HOME we go. Via a toymaster. Fionn picks up magasine. Motorway traffic is heavy & slow. Kate needs the loo! Pull off motorway and then off to quiet place. Home... and we have dinner! Fionn makes sandwich for quick adult hunger satiation. I put on fast pasta (small penne) and fish fingers for kids. chomp chomp
Daire violin practice.
Bed. Kids pyjamaed, teeth, 2 books Kate, then 4 pages of Wind in the Willows

food. We have Fionn's warmed mushroom pie (with mashed potatoes without mushrooms for kids. Kaye & I also have sweetcorn + cheese. Daire complains about a mushroom and writes up a formal complaint. Fionn answers the complaint.
We make coffee after dinner. Read newspaper. Daire visiting Conor. Fionn tidies loads of stuff upstairs. Kate & I go shopping to superquinn. Kate falls asleep. Bottles into recycling bank. Then. Hmmm. Get Kate out. She wakes a bit and really likes the idea of a particular baby trolley. She fits and strapped in. Sleepy but wakes up after we get bread. She munches on bread - slice after slice through the shopping. Maybe 6 small slices in total. Veg/Fruit section she gets out of baby seat into seat for her size. Yoghurts + milk. General stuff. All collected then checkout. Pile stuff on conveyor. Kate wants to help but trolley too full. She helps push the trolley. While I help pack bags Kate is out of trolley. Lift her up to sign receipt.
We call to butcher. Get sausages, chicken, mince, burgers. Kate gets black jack lollipop. Yummmmm. home unpack shopping
I cook dinner. Yummy carrot + turnip + onion + garlic + spring onion veg in oil/butter - mixed spice, curry powder, pepper, sweet chilli sauce. Potatoes - I mash some for kids which turns out to be enough bar 1 for everyone. And sausages. BEans? I think. Not sure. what hmm. I forget stuff.
Camp night on RTE - together with other tv stuff.

I gave Fionnuala and the kids a lecture on the differences,
science, history and etymology of Theobromine and
Caffeine last night. They told me to shut up pretty quickly! :(
Chocolate comes from the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao).
Coffee from coffee beans (Coffea arabica, other Coffea trees).
I was confused over that.
Chocolate contains Theobromine but not caffeine
(unless caffeine is added on purpose to bars).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine
I love wiki!
http://www.xocoatl.org/caffeine.htm
Theobromine and Caffeine are confused as chemically they are very similar.
They both have neurochemical effects on people and animals but the effects
are quite different.
Theobromine is metabolised more slowly, the effects have a slow onset
and lasts longer.
The effects of theobrimone is described as gentle, smooth, sensual stimulation
as opposed to nervous stimulation of caffeine.
Dogs and horses metabolise theobromine VERY slowly
so if they eat chocolate it can stay in their system a long time and
if they eat lots of chocolate it can overload their poor livers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffea
Theobroma means "divine food" in Greek
are bromine and bromide the chemical substance related (etymologically) to food?
I don't think so.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromide
Bromine (from Gr. Bromos, meaning "stench")
The word coffee enters English by way of the French cafe, Italian caffe, Dutch koffie,
German Kaffee and Turkish Kahveh which all in turn derive from the Arabic word qahwa.
http://groups.msn.com/foodiesCorner/coffeeorigins.msnw
Also khw. Central Semitic, to be(come) weak, dim, dull, dark. caf-Ai, cafeteria, caffeine,
coffee, ultimately from Arabic qahwa, coffee, wine (originally perhaps "dark stuff"),
akin to Arabic kahiya, to be(come) weak,
Aramaic kh, qh, Hebrew khb, qhb, to be(come) dim, faint, dull.

what is the etymology of Theodolite?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodolite
and caffeine? where does the name caffeine come from?
you could do a week of word a day in theos related words

Call over to Sheila and Orla. With Daire & Kate and Fionnuala this time Kids have biscuits and fun. They called last night and virus is back. I guessed it would as we left all the security holes wide open.
AntiVir is the bestest and brilliantest. Asked a few people in work and this is THE one thay all recommend. It IS good. Finds AND cleans viruses on disk - all clamav and norton found. And when can't rm virus in memory removes it on reboot. Not aure if I have set it to auto update properly. But I think maybe I have. Experiment gently with both norton and antivir installed ... but disable norton.
Then find how to download a bunch of windows updates in one go. Orla does her doc on pc while that downloads. Kids & Fionn home. Updates applied so holes should be mostly gone. After a teeny bit windows update now says to install service pack 2. Augh! :-( Right. Enough for tonight. Will look up what is in sp2 on the web.
anti-virus fun Call over to Sheila and Orla. I discover what windows XP looks like! Wow! It's been soooo long! :) Orla shows ne Norton Antivirus. Of which I have heard bad things. It is continually popping up virus alarm box if left enabled. We do a full exhaustive and boring scan. Can't tell it to look right there at the file it found !?!? So it finds the virus it finds all the time eventually and can't delete it. Probably in memory. Hmm.
Right.
We find on fsecure site info on virus/trojan.
How it works. What it does. And a neato tool to delete it.
Opasoft/Opaserv
Clever fsecure thing.
f-secure.com/virus-info/
Small fast download.
Unzip. Run - it kills the virus in memory, removes the file,
fixes stuff on hard disk and in registy. And scans whole system
fast.
After reboot (umpteenth) ... after a while Norton re-enables itself.
Nothing for a couple of minutes, then, every minute or so:
Right.
Seems like something else is active.
And norton detects when it writes itself AND removes new file.
But doesn't take care of virus in memory that is replicating itself.
I brought some to try on the digital camera.
After all that. Check windows update. It's never been applied. There are BUCKETS of updates to apply. Eugh. Right. I disable most and set an early critical one to download to see how long it might take. It is faster than expected (said 800k but must not have been). BUT now ones I disabled are not in the list!? AUGH GAH!
time to go home

1. The Way The Way that can be experienced is not true; The world that can be constructed is not true. The Way manifests all that happens and may happen; The world represents all that exists and may exist. To experience without intention is to sense the world; To experience with intention is to anticipate the world. These two experiences are indistinguishable; Their construction differs but their effect is the same. Beyond the gate of experience flows the Way, Which is ever greater and more subtle than the world. 3. Without Action Not praising the worthy prevents contention, Not esteeming the valuable prevents theft, Not displaying the beautiful prevents desire. In this manner the sage governs people: Emptying their minds, Filling their bellies, Weakening their ambitions, And strengthening their bones. If people lack knowledge and desire Then they can not act; If no action is taken Harmony remains. 11. Tools Thirty spokes meet at a nave; Because of the hole we may use the wheel. Clay is moulded into a vessel; Because of the hollow we may use the cup. Walls are built around a hearth; Because of the doors we may use the house. Thus tools come from what exists, But use from what does not. 13. Self Both praise and blame cause concern, For they bring people hope and fear. The object of hope and fear is the self - For, without self, to whom may fortune and disaster occur? Therefore, Who distinguishes himself from the world may be given the world, But who regards himself as the world may accept the world. 66. Lead by Following The river carves out the valley by flowing beneath it. Thereby the river is the master of the valley. In order to master people One must speak as their servant; In order to lead people One must follow them. So when the sage rises above the people, They do not feel oppressed; And when the sage stands before the people, They do not feel hindered. So the popularity of the sage does not fail, He does not contend, and no one contends against him. 67. Unimportance All the world says, "I am important; I am separate from all the world. I am important because I am separate, Were I the same, I could never be important." Yet here are three treasures That I cherish and commend to you: The first is compassion, By which one finds courage. The second is restraint, By which one finds strength. And the third is unimportance, By which one finds influence. Those who are fearless, but without compassion, Powerful, but without restraint, Or influential, yet important, Cannot endure.SoftwareManagementManifesto interesting http://www.confucius.org/english/ed0101.htm :)

Fionn goes to Kate's creche parent meeting. Daire down from computer (Kobo Deluxe). Kate wakes up. She's wet the couch. It's bedtime but both kids eat a plate of pasta. Then up and pyjamas. Finish Daire's book - Roald Dahl - The Giraffe and the Pelly and me. Daire reads Tintin from library then. Get Kate ready. She runs around a bit. Read her old macdonald tractor stuck in mud animals pull it out. ANd where do babies come from. I say just 5 pages. Show her where we will finish. When we get to finish she objects. Okay. One more page. We read that .... then she objects. Slightly less strenuously. I computer. kolf and konquest and kobo deluxe and ksir-tetris or something. Fionn home. talk, tv, bed.
I fix food for myself - sweetcorn. Mmmm. Kate comes down! Watches motorbike racing. Up we go. Kate is cross. When I get to bed Kate still complaining for a while.
Collect Daire & David from school/violin. We wait a while outside then egg David to collect his stuff. Daire's left his violin book. Then all way through school to get coats. Meet Miss Ni Chathalain(sp?). Bring them home. Grab lunch for self. Back to work.
Evening leave 17:30. Augh. Traffic all way up Heather road. Slow slow slow. Right. Slow slow slow slow slow. Swap lanes. Vrm slow slow slow. Right hand lane slow slow slow slow leave cars in slow slow. Roundabout Vrmmm vermm meet Kate & Fionn. Also see Bob and ?Oisin?Connor? I cycle home. Pass Bob & kid and stop talk to Fionn and Kate. Kate cries lots when I cycle away leaving them stuck in slow q. Once they get to roundabout there is no traffic in their way rest of the way home.
me very silly up late tv and reading bed late
Fionn home early yay David and Daire out to play. I stand watching. They loiter not going into Conor's house while I am there. As soon as I go they're in. I head across and haul them out. Daire cross but as soon as I go away they play football in Conor's front garden. Conor goes swimming. Daire & David play on green. David getting covered in muck. Lucky Fionn got him pair of Daire's pants instead of school uniform. Afternoon is flying. Fionn doing house plans editing. Wrote letter planning permission object apartments. I call doctor get appointment for vasectomy.
Off to Croke park. I drive Dad's car. Toll bridge. We bring Conor and Daire. Mum minds Kate at home. Ireland hammer Oz compromise rules seem to allow rugby tackles without ball. Daire & Conor like the fact that their team are definately winning. Feed them kit-kats 1st quarter break. We all goto get food in middle. Huge qs. No chips. Get to front when hot food over for 10 mins. Send the rest back to seats. I head along. Q a while. See a full round of burgers go from frozen to cooked. Get some of last box. Kids eat them. Fin. Drive home. Grand. Fionn back finished.
food.
I manage to generate xml freemind can load in PI tool's python. Yaay. First more than 1/2 line python change for me. combining PI and freemind FreeMind makes looking at AND adding notes to the phylogenetic trees easy peasy and user firendly.
I get breakfast and make rye bread lunch for myself. It's chilly light rain wet underfoot on bike to work. ears cold.
start work freemind to jim get distracted hey freemind would be great viewer for PI phylogenetic trees hack up dot to xml in perl thing lovely ... but now more info in tree would be great ALSO jeez configure of Qt had finished (started yesterday) kicked off a "make" AND 3 HOURS later it's STILL building !!!! ???? !!!!
Loads for work on FileQueue FINALLY making progress (i.e. visible progress) (progress yesterday involved working out lots of bugs and practically no new tests). queue open doesn't realise things are removed if IT removes them when it has them locked (likely me not checking return codes correctly in 100% of cases). Big batch of tests on the module all working now just 1 thing to iron out. Mailed spec to Stella too.
Home. Late I get home :( Shopping has arrived. Fionn out to work to do her project management course homework: work breakdown diagram and plan for homeless. Kids to bed. Kate insists on going into our bed. Right I read her stories there but don't stay till she is asleep. Terminator! :) news gah silly tv MMmmmmm brack. chomp chomp before bed
work work work get lots of my FileQueue.pm code done start running tests but get stuck silly things returning undef or untrue values from Queue::Dir Storable stuff If only 1 thing in Q next alwqays returns it? If more than that next goes through and at end returns undef ... and resets Q (also refreshing from disk) Anyway lots of work writing tests and getting them to be good. Loads of code ... reasonably okay but returns need a tidy. Taking longer than expected.
Fionn calls 18:29ish. Car ran out of petrol in road. :-E eek Silly nasty person drove right up behind her. Car started and she abandoned it in Bewlies. She jsut had Kate with her. Derval collected kids. I intend leaving right then but hack at FileQueue.pm and t/filequeue.t a bit waugh! Nearly 19:00 so rush home.
Fionn has pasta and peas and frankfurters made for kids & I. I put child seat on bike, collect front bike light, top spout of petrol can. Have food. Cycle cycle Maxol Sandyford. 4 euros for 4 liters. Cycle cycle cycle via Ind Est to Bewlies. Avoid steep Sandyford hill or dark narrow road after that. Might have been shorted but. Pass Winston. Into hotel carpark. Yep find car. Park bike. Petrol into car. Car seats fold down, parcel shelf off, bike into car. Me into car. Home. Lisa's friends at door of house talking. I extract bike and all from car.
In home TV is being shunned. Daire & Fionn are doing yoga. I eat more food (Kate's lunch - rye bread was not a hit with the kids!). Fionn brings kids up to bed, well, I start shifting them. Get teeth brushed. Read story to Daire - Kate objects but hasn't got her book yet. Fionn calms her - they get books. Daire & I finish James and the Giant Peach. Then Kate into bed. Irish legends Fionn and the Dragon. Puss in boots. Kate cross doesn't want light off or to stay in bed. I just say night and leave.
Computer on - Fionn wants to do project mgmt course homework plan for homeless developed from strategy document. Kate cries but not screaming. I go into Kate after while but that makes her worse ... but whew not too bad. She quietens down gradually. Fionn at puter, myself downstairs. TnG in outback Australia town with huge alcoholism problems. RTE2 in America Attica prison and civil rights. I do internet shop later ... then email fionn docs with big sendmail config in middle. Discover mailertable allows me do it easy. Wonder why in all my life before I hadn't found mailertable. But then is this the way to do it? Not sure again. Sheesh. But it works. And the two trys I had made as well as the tests get sent out. oops. shutdown
Downstairs. Very hungry. ha! Loads of spagetti from yesterday.
I heat it all up, some butter (it is with sardines, rasins, pine-nuts, fennel).

Home. Fionn up in bed. Kids with her. Daire doing homework. Horseplay with Kate. Lift her up into air by thighs. Then go down. Kate takes cold rice. Heat up rice and chicken Korma. Put on pasta too. Kids rice first then pasta with chopsticks. Finish the apple juice. Fionn down dinner about over.
tea tv piano then kids to bed Daire gets into pyjamas grand. Kate we follow her and eventually manage to get teeth brushed and pyjama top + nappy on. New pyjamas. She leaves bottoms off. Then read story for Daire - James with giant peach arrive in new york and descend ... Kate objects. Then Read two stories from two little celtic legends books for Kate. Oisin and Cu-Cullain. She is not happy to leave it at that. Kicks off sheets. Goes over to Daire to get stories read to her. A bit of tv, kitchen clean, Ruth phones, Sheila and Orla phone computer is frozen. Kate in Daire's bed wanting story. Daire is trying to sleep. So I get her in her own bed but she's really cross. I explode after a bit and into our room on her own she goes. I hang up all the clothes and do stuff and she's quieter I leave her out and we're both very contrite and she goes into her bed and is asleep very quickly. *sigh* I'm wreckedish. Stew comedy quite like other Fionn wouldn't like either I think.

news, women and murder more likely vs men as they're stronger and legal system bias
nicaragua men against violence and ...
Fionn & I think and debate.
I feel humans are so complex and societies also complex that
peace is no natural state. Society history and evolution can lead to both.
I do not know over long term given either good or tight
situations is violence or peace more likely to evolve. Peace yes - ish - it
certainly will allow society to develop technology if they have time for
luxury but they could easily be opressing a big part of their society at the same time.
Slavery or poverty/suppression.
Is violence more natural as it is difficult to break cycles of violence?
Cow example Fionn puts forward.
If people of more enlightened nature told us to stop oppressing the cows and
give equal rights. We would resent that and if we didn't accept that it
would lead to more churn/situations. But before 100% of cown are suppressed
and are eventually for the chop. If there is revolution there is much
more noticable incidents but possibly some cows can overcome/escape.
Fionn up in night with Kate apparently. I'm oblivious.

bed.
Afternoon we all pack up and head in car to Dun Laoghaire. Walk up path Daire hurling. Watch windsurfers. Daire & I beside beach and come to end have to clamber up tall wall. Kate out of buggy and walks too. Likes touching rocks.
16:30 head off to Dun Laoghaire. Driving first glance of water WHOOOO! 3/4 more sails out busy water with waves rolling in and breaking everywhere. I rig up beside someone derigging. Everything together fast, most downhaul I ever manage I think somehow. Wetsuit on. Out I go. I launch by rocks and it's a bit deep and I end up swimming for ages. Less wind just there and deep/waves so waterstart hard. Avoid rocks and get going. Oh wind is more east than I thought. I thought more north-east. Sail zoom out 45 degrees over waves towards ringsend. Sailing back in towards beach with waves, wind & waves push in more. Brilliant fun. Hey! Less people out. One other guy with green sail out - can gybe sometimes. Starting (half dry more waterstart as generally deeper than expected and waves keep changing the depth) on inside (i.e. near beach) is actually harder than outside. On inside there is less wind a bit in shadow. Outside some waves get woah stomach dropping big! Yeek! Adrenalin. But I avoid crashing in breaking zones. Good few waterstarts outside (after trying to tack) I'm happy as can do more easily. Still work but fun :) Try gybes on inside mostly a couple half or more before falling. Tricksy. Green person in. I land close to wall down beach a bit. No wind at all. Try get going but very tricky. Finally swim board and sail the short bit back to the beach. Pack up now it's dark. Home.
Fionn has kept food for me. I munch. Kids bed by Fionn I think. TV. Bed later. Can't find car keys? So windsurf gear left on/in car.

In general I dislike petitions but have found one worthy.
Some petitions miss the point I think but reading up on this I agree with everything
(I'm very fussy).
Not in agreement itself with the desecration or interfering with the
lines of energy *ahem* of the Hill of Tara but with the focus of the
government and it's agencies on roads to the detriment of
more sustainable AND more practical transport.
Also with the way the government and it's agencies
( I need a tla - tgaias ?) operate.
Of course I, being of the people, am also the government so shut up and stop
complaining now and do something about it!
7857. James Coleman Dublin, Ireland.
The government and agencies need to operate in an ethical manner.
We can not trust them and I am very uneasy with the responsibility held.
Sensible alternative transport options are available.

Extremely annoying release. bug446 comes in and investigate really fast 3 cosmetic changes ... but we've to do them and release? ambiguity arises in one so requires delving into do the delving in ... fix stuff, test stuff phone home will be late then do release release takes while to get all docs right then after packed up and tagged find ARGH! missed two files so repack it up
Once get up have breakfast. We've loads of leftover lovely food to munch on after dinner party. Fionn has done clearing work in garden. Picked up arch wind blew over with loganberries and sweetpeas and camellia attached. Chopped stuff. Also is clearing out small room we're going to paint, tidying kids toys and also clearing out the attic a bit. (typing this in a alittle voice is shouting inside my head "NESTING INSTINCT" but I'm ignoring it) I at least am of some use and paint the little room. Start with the awkward bits. Goes slowly. Kids rough and tumbling with big sofa double fold matress on top of our bed. Food 16:30. YUM. Chicken korma and rice and tiramisu after. Painting better after that. Don't quite have enough in two half pots to finish. Fionn and Kate take buggy and go to shop to get newspaper. It rains while they're gone and I'm still painting. They arrive back happy and bouncy though.
I reheat stuff for my tea and snack on delicasies in fridge. Heat tomato soup and bread & butter for Daire. Kiwi for Kate, she spoons out contents herself. Then kiwi and orange for Daire. Kate falls asleep on couch on me. Fionn gets her bed stuff and we put it on her and carry her up to her bed. - well - up to her mattress beside Fionn's bed with sheep skin over her Daire up with me - pyjamas, teeth, book he reads himself in bed. Freeciv ! Augh. Play and fix script.
Then Fionn up, puter off, I bring up clothes and hang out to dry, grab food for my tummy. While munching hear Kate crying. I go up and she's beside Fionn on her mattress but cross and crying. Can't settle her in place. I bundle her up in blanket. She says her nose is sore (she's getting over cold she's had last two days). We get her cream. Downstairs we go. I hold Kate in bundle and finish my food off with tiramisu (last of) and wine. Kate watches people on tv. Then up we go. Light on lying down under bed. Kate is happy doesn't sleep but makes reasonably happy noises. I read a bit ... dropping off ... dropping ... Turn out light sleep. ..... Kate cries a bit - light on. Later on again 3:30 Kate cries a bit more ... settles down again. urg.
We plan to get out of house. Get diy/stuff Woodies/Atlantic/Somewhere. Do diy and house/garden tidying. Escape check mirror in Dun Laoghaire and pump tyres, fix trailer plastic covers. BUT tidying and reading newspaper and other activities impinge.
We leave for Dun Laoghaire 16:00. Kate & Daire & I get parking ticket as the security van is there. Then in car and Fionn lies across seats for a rest. Gates of coal harbour are shut. Lift Daire onto wall beside gate and he jumps down. Then pass him tyre and bag of tools/materials. Then lift Kate up onto wall. Then up myself and down other side and lift Kate. Kate has red wellies on. She likes stomping in puddles. Two other lads on a yacht taking down it's mast. We go to boat, spill out water and pump up wheels. Can't with kids and time do much about trailer pads. It showers twice. Take cover under nearby currach. I join kids last shower until it's gone. Sitting on mast in middle. Daire in front. Kate behind. Looks like fun. We go out by slip-way. Daire first out onto rocks then down and under railing. Kate the same. I help her but she goes under railing and climbs up herself. Then me I go around railing with gear.
Back to car and Fionn. We pile in and drive over to windsurf area. Couple of windsurfers packing up. Kids and I head for pier thing. Water at perfect height for it. Pause on beach attaching hooks to rod. I help Daire cast a few times, then he does it himself and is soon very good. Kate sticks close hanging on to us. She gets a couple of gos. Then the line is sticking when cast out. A loop is unravelled and catching line. We do a cast and pull it until we see all tangle. It's not twisted too badly but trying to untangle very difficult. Kate doesn't like this messing and heads back to car. Daire minds her. Break line and tie it just one knot instead of tangle. Daire back. But then the knot is catching the line. I leg it back to car and get bag for penknife. Casting better again then.
=head1 NAME What is wrong with this perl? use strict; use Data::Dumper; my (%discountTypesNNN); $discountTypesNNN{357135710}{137}{"09"} = "flat"; my $ref = \%discountTypesNNN; print "Dumper \$ref: " . Dumper($ref); print "Dumper \%{\$ref}: " . Dumper(%{$ref}); =head1 OUTPUT Dumper $ref: $VAR1 = { '357135710' => { '137' => { '09' => 'flat' } } }; Dumper %{$ref}: $VAR1 = '357135710'; $VAR2 = { '137' => { '09' => 'flat' } }; =head1 COMMENT It appears that accessing the hash through the reference e.g. $ref->{357135710}->{137}->{"09"}; is okay But dereferencing and copying the hash is either j. done incorrectly (something is wrong with the syntax here?) (perldoc perlref says: It isn't possible to create a true reference to an IO handle (file- handle or dirhandle) using the backslash operator. The most you can get is a reference to a typeglob, which is actually a complete symbol table entry. But see the explanation of the *foo{THING} syntax below. However, you can still use type globs and globrefs as though they were IO handles. ) on "the beloved" *foo{THING} syntax (again from perldoc perlref: As a special case, "\(@foo)" returns a list of references to the contents of @foo, not a reference to @foo itself. Likewise for %foo, except that the key references are to copies (since the keys are just strings rather than full-fledged scalars). ) but *foo{THING} : o. doesn't work, is old and deprecated ? in practice but not in docs? and p. waider doesn't belove *foo{THING} or k. is correct but bug in perl I'm inclined to believe j. but can't find out how to properly dereference deep hashes or complex structures? Further interesting behaviour can be seen with different dereferencing. E.g. returning reference from hash like this in subroutine and then dereferencing => a blank hash is introduced into the hash??? Dumper $ref: $VAR1 = { '357135710' => { '137' => { '09' => 'flat' }, 'HASH(0x810283c)' => {} } }; =cut
Reporting bugs I mention there could have been more info in a bug. And the idea grows till I collect thoughts on what I would like to see in this bug and bugs in general.

TODO: prep bug report thing for web, another tTODO here somewhere here about it Thursday and Friday here is main content:
http://bugzilla.dub.ie.alphyra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=407 Just to note detail that should be added in general to help define the bug exactly. Quick summary of requirements: (it would be nice to map every bug to an exact requirement ... requirement definition and tracking is a whole other days work though) The earliest activation or transaction on the card determines partnership of the card. Cards are listed partner first then non-partner. Partner totals and non-partner totals are shown as well as overall totals Only topup or redeem transactions are shown (not balance or activate). Topup and redeem transactions are correlated together and shown one row for redeem then one row for topup. A note on implementation: Partnership determination in code was a later added requirement and the code/sql involved is awkward. We should monitor this for performance as well as correctness. A refactoring of both database and code could be done depending on performance requirements and effort. Maybe 1-5 here could be used as a checklist ... we could maybe review and refine them as I've just quickly drawn them up here for this specific case. Are there general or generic bug reporting guidelines or checklists out there? Collect them, use them, refine them and make a good list. 1. As well as version of multi_mops the specific machine e.g. probably mops-test in this case. 2. Particular part of system within which problem is was mentioned: Overall Monthly transaction Summary Report. 3. Along with detail on the problem (in this case details on the report): The non-partner transactions are being listed in the champion sports activation section. The card numbers are listed and the transaction value is shown for redeem transactions - no other figures are listed. Tested for April, May, June, July.. 4. Further exact detail would greatly help. Exact card numbers and what IS reported and what is required to be reported should be pasted into the bug report. e.g. http://mops.dub.ie.alphyra.com//reports/giftcard/Champion%20Sports_18082004.html specifically in this report card number 9372261000004373 appears in both partner and non-partner 9372261000004373 Champion Sports - Unit F18 Pavillion Shopping Centre Swords 02/07/2004 -5.00 0.00 redeem -5.00 0.00 9372261000004373 Champion Sports - Unit F18 Pavillion Shopping Centre Swords 02/07/2004 redeem -5.00 9372261000004373 Spar Feltrim - Feltrim SC Kinsealy Swords Co Dublin 08/05/2004 10.00 0.00 redeem -5.00 0.00 9372261000004373 Spar Feltrim - Feltrim SC Kinsealy Swords Co Dublin 08/05/2004 redeem -5.00 5. Detail on the data being worked on. How the test was set up. Where the data came from. e.g. In this case: What type and value of card, when the card was activated and terminal details. What transactions were performed with card. Resulting logs and data in database if they would appear to be useful. In this case some info from database would be quite useful. e.g. mysql> select * from giftcard where card_no = "9372261000004373"; +------------------+------------+------------+-------+-----------+------------------+--------+------------------+-------------------------+--------+----------+---------------------+-------+---------------+ | card_no | partner_id | expiry | value | cardlimit | transactionlimit | points | card_pointslimit | transaction_pointslimit | status | type | expiryaftervalidate | owner | owner_address | +------------------+------------+------------+-------+-----------+------------------+--------+------------------+-------------------------+--------+----------+---------------------+-------+---------------+ | 9372261000004373 | 100 | 2005-07-15 | 0 | 1000 | 1000 | 0 | NULL | NULL | 1 | prevalue | 31536000 | NULL | NULL | +------------------+------------+------------+-------+-----------+------------------+--------+------------------+-------------------------+--------+----------+---------------------+-------+---------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) mysql> select * from giftcard_history where card_no = "9372261000004373"; +------------------+----------+--------+---------------------+--------------+----------+---------+--------+---------+--------+----------------+-------------+---------------+ | card_no | txn_type | serial | txn_date | partner_flag | termid | transid | amount | balance | points | points_balance | description | merch_address | +------------------+----------+--------+---------------------+--------------+----------+---------+--------+---------+--------+----------------+-------------+---------------+ | 9372261000004373 | 03 | | 2004-05-08 10:02:16 | 0 | 35306057 | 50 | 1000 | 0 | 0 | 0 | | | | 9372261000004373 | 02 | | 2004-07-15 16:36:10 | 1 | 35306115 | 88 | -500 | 0 | 0 | 0 | | | | 9372261000004373 | 02 | | 2004-07-02 13:33:35 | 1 | 35306116 | 90 | -500 | 0 | 0 | 0 | | | | 9372261000004373 | 00 | | 2004-07-02 13:40:28 | 1 | 35306116 | 89 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | | | +------------------+----------+--------+---------------------+--------------+----------+---------+--------+---------+--------+----------------+-------------+---------------+ 4 rows in set (0.00 sec) In the case where testing other scripts logs could be useful. I'm not including any here as all the info to detail fully this problem is already present without them. There are some good resources on the web that give guidelines on what information should be included when reporting a bug. There are some interesting and fun thoughts there too :). http://www.mozilla.org/quality/bug-writing-guidelines.html http://www.testingcraft.com/techniques.html http://www.sqatester.com/testingtips/bugreport/index.htm http://www.sqatester.com/bugsfixes/howtowritebugreport.htm Bug report tips and more on software QA and testing 2 related "fundamental philoMOsophical" thoughts: Bug reporting is communication between reporter and development. Much thought have gone into best practices for this activity and much of this is available on the web. Many software products on web add to general best practices and have their own tailored bug reporting guidelines. Requirements are communication between everyone working on product from customers, through to managers, QA, development. Requirements, if they are well defined, then tracked and managed help with the whole software process. In fact "help" is too weak a word. They can be the foundations on which the whole product is built. In particular when reporting a bug if the bug can be mapped to a requirement then the description of the problem is made much easier as the requirement contains the description of the correct behaviour. Where a bug cannot be mapped to a specific requirement this shows a gap in the requirements of a system. New requirements should be drawn up to fill that gap. Where a bug is mapped to a requirement the requirement may be reviewed to ensure it is a good* requirement. Bugs in a requirements area are an indication of a misinterpretation of the requirement. Requirements may be continually refined with feedback from tracking defects and finding defects root cause. Good requirements are: Necessary - no redundant requirements, but yet important to have "complete" requirements. user requirements and system requirements Atomic - one idea in a requirement Clear - not open to (mis)interpretation, understandable Traceable - split requirements into groups e.g. by feature, by component of system - and number them Verifiable - Inspection, Demonstration, Analysis, Test Attainable - Achievable, feasible Extra interesting links and reading but less relevant as they go on ... *good requirements http://www.google.ie/search?q=cache:EQmZ0l92LboJ:www.catalyst.uq.edu.au/designsurfer/good_requirements.PDF+good+requirements&hl=en It turns out that good requirements have the following essential qualities: 1. A good requirement contains one idea. If a requirement is found to contain more than one idea then it should be broken into two or more new requirements. 2. A good requirement is clear; that is, the idea contained within it is not open to interpretation. If any aspects of a requirement are open to interpretation then the designer should consult the relevant parties and clarify the statement. 3. Requirements should remain as general as possible. This ensures that the scope of the design is not unnecessarily limited. 4. A good requirement is easily verifiable, that is, at the end of the design process it is possible to check whether the requirement has been met. These criteria apply to both user and systems requirements. Examples are given in the section below. In addition to the qualities listed above, a set of good requirements should completely describe all aspects relevant to a product's design. http://engineering.lbl.gov/sy/requirements.htm # Necessary - No gold plating # Atomic - Describes one and only 1 function # Concise - Minimal, Understandable, Non-redundant, # Traceable For example, every Project X Observation requirement is linked to a Project X Top-Level Science requirement - Primary or imposed and derived requirements - There is a trail to the driving requirement needs # Verifiable - Inspection, Demonstration, Analysis, Test # Attainable - Achievable, feasible http://www.jot.fm/issues/issue_2003_07/column7 http://www.reciprocality.org/Reciprocality/index.html http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?AgileProcesses http://www.extremeprogramming.org/rules.html http://www.martinfowler.com/articles/newMethodology.html http://alistair.cockburn.us/ http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?BugReportingFramework http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?RichBugReports http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?BugTrackingSoftware http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?DefectTracking http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ReportsSmell :)http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/cat_management.html http://www.politicalcompass.org/ http://www.enigma.ie/wardrive/

I think when I sent Daire down they just woke up. Kate & I were waiting round the car weeding for a bit. Eventually Daire came and then Joey. Apologies for lateness I stupidly said "ahh sure it's grand!" DOH! And I was wanting to strangle someone really. :( Silly me. Then later David with a photo and two bananas. Gate still open in school we were there 9:15ish. Met Aisling's mom and they're going to Australia or thinking of it. Aisling was telling them Daire told her about Australia. Anyway .... that's this morning so far I think. Oh Alphyra car park is very full again. ITSMobile people moved in.
I go get bike. Unlock, Raise saddle. cycle cycle have to stop at roundabout, get into flow beside car not turning off check release - nothing on it, email ebay stuff breakfast I eat just right I brought in months ago (at least think it mone) and sit down then coffee ahhhh
up dress breakfast D dress self, bring Kate's clothes in car at creche Kate's teacher comments how good she was yesterday when they went outside she wasn't upset and went in to help Claire. At roundabout small hesitant micra. Too close to left so I can't go inside. So around outside. Momentum is good. If stop have to wait much longer.
I'm still fixing and testing smsengine filtering in morning. Then full regression testing and find HUGE batch messages have 3 issues:
Fionn's tired. Hullo we say. Kids go get dressed in pyjamas. I help Kate and brush teeth and then read her story - well she chooses a radisson pipi longstocking page that you stick things to. We stick things and "read" it. Then Kate unsettled. Stephen Baxter's Ring for me. Tom Holt's elf book Fionn is reading and then Ian Banks Song of Stone for Kate. After tossing a bit she drops off sound asleep. I go down. Daire & Fionn are watching Duncan thingy house building program on TV. I get Carrot soup Fionn has made yum. With homemade bread too. Daire heads up to bed.
TV. Leave stuff in kitchen mostly in a mess.
I shower. Bed. Wrecked tired.
Bill's got a gig coming up this Wed. loads of smsengine work adding automated tests and implementing stuff including filtering
Initially Kate into teeny tot area me minding. I watch Daire see hime on climbing wall. Climbing up little bit ... then swinging off. I want to see hime go high high ... Fionn gets Kate a red top ... we're not sure what she is allowed to do. In little place while Fionn gets us coffee and breakfast rool and chocolate. We sit on couch relax a bit eat/drink. Then Fionn into big place with Kate. I read newspaper. Later kate through net "HEllo Daddy". I come in and she shows me slide. In big area ball guns being fired (ow!) Kate doesn't get hit even once. She shows me slide and tunnel and climbs high up (with ehm. encouragment) Follow her on ground but them lose track! Run around a bit. Fionn spots her finally. She comes down. More ball play. More other play. Finally out and spend while in tot place. I'm waiting for Fionn. We have fun piling things up and riding on things and lifting/carrying/positioning. Then Fionn finds us and says she was looking for us! Out we go and drive home via Firhouse. Pas real close to Scholarstown park actually Colm & Linda 5 nearish BBQ in Keith's place.
Cork match. Daire watching. Oghhh seems rough both sides really want to play. phone home, talk mum mostly me cross Daire castle D & Kate arguing we make up
I go Windsurf. Tide will be out, strong SW winds. Wind will be offshore in Dun Laoghaire but I'm late - it's 17:30 when I get all gear on car and Cork had won the hurling WOHHOOO! :) Assumpta comes out and congrats me. And text Bill too. Catch forecast on way down. Eek. Force 7 21kts gusting 9 at Dublin airport. Dun Laoghaire car park there's very gentle wind. With occasional heavy gust. So rigging is less risky. Tide surprisingly high for low water. Nice though can sail a bit in shallow water. Out on water wind goes from real strong gust to nothing. I stay close. Up to neck, head out of depth few times. Water start sometimes but uphaul others. In water no wind very hard to hold sail ready for next gust. Great fun. No other surfers out. Flat water but no carve gybe. Get mostly round twice. Wind drops off completely. I'm in and packed up and it's dark 20:00. German student in Ireland just arrives staying Blackrock surf wetsuit water temp chat.
Home and kids in pyjamas up our room. Daire is puss in boots :) He has bike helmet on, a belt, cork flag in belt and Fionn's suede boots. Brilliant! I read Kate the hungry caterpillar as bedtime story. Then she's hyper a little not wanting to sleep. I read some of Baxter's Ring to her (Fionn got it for me from Library). That doesn't settle her but Tell her to serttle/sleep a few times and she drops off. Read a bit more.
Then downstairs. Night to Daire. Fionn brings Daire down and we tell him. Sort out clothes that are drying (went mad 3 washes yesterday).
Fionn plays piano. I get windsurf gear in from car. Really howling gale now. Rain too. Turn on bright back garden spotlight. Really pretty. I play piano then stupid veg tv long time till bed late.
Fionn & I go to Atlantic Homecare buy pots (for potted herb+strawberry presents for people) and bird house. (robin/sparrow/tit sizes, cute, slate roof) Traffic is unbelievably bad. Races in Leopardstown yes but ... We avoid it all. To Stillorgan, best way make illegal right turn, traffic timing suits us grand. But this time coming into Stillorgan we get stuck in traffic. Realise petrol is all gone needle in red and our warning light hasn't worked for a while now. Fionn buys bananas and potatoes and milk. Kate & I get petrol and newspaper and popcorn for starving baby girl. Then onto nimble fingers for main purpose of expedition. Present for Adam. Lego pullback mechano things. Get two! I say. We get two. Honk spiderman bike horn too.
Home. Food. Put rosemary (big from our big pot) and thyme and strawberry I put in pots a month ago into nice blue pot. Daire back. Kids in playing. Daire's castle down from attic. Hrungg. Kate gets in fights. She ends up (some periods all happy play) but falls against table probably in argument over something and her mouth is cut. Fionn brings her up for nice comforting bath ... but there's no hot water :( Kate actually likes bath anyway. When Kate comes out I wrap her in towells and boot windows :-E and put on jump ahead toddlers. She LOVES it. Clearing picture with mouse then lovely animal singing a song. Daire & gang hear music and come up after 7 songs. I have shower ... hear Daire & other kids being nice to Kate and showing her other things.
I go get Ruth babysitter bit after 7. Bring pot and wine. Pot heavy. Kate cries when we go. They're watching ??? and Bullwinkle tv. Fionn navigates directions perfect. Keith meets us. Fiona & Colm & Linda are busy busy cooking. Brrr weather broken it's windy and a bit chilly. Loads of faces and EEK people read web site! Scary. Hello Dave Murells & Brian McGinty! :-P''' Fionn is driving. Yum food. Salads and BBQ. Lots of wine for me. White then rose both sweet. Then red shiraz & cabernet sauvignon's. Yum yum. We get home 1:30.
Working on adding config options and loading them up and adding tests from them as qell as queuing stuff. Half day for me as Fionn is doing a course and I'm minding Kate and Daire.
Flurry of emails to Mike, also Stella, Fionnuala and Bill. Going sailing, books, bikes, music. Bill:
We've been playing the piano. Fionn & I and kids too. I've discovered guitar chords I have I can convert and play along. Not sure of my rhythm yet on piano ... mostly play just one hand. Can pick out tune but singing and chords sound better. Major chords all easy. 1st 3rd 5th notes play one hand. C F G major all natural notes A D E major 3rd is sharp, Am Dm Em (m=minor) all natural notes. Can cover LOADS of songs with that selection. Then also for weird chords e.g. E7 can play E minor plus C# (I think) Play Don MacLean's Walking in Memphis Fionn upstairs, next day she says it sounded good :) She should know not to encourage me maybe!!! :)
Run away 2 o'clock after. Car not blocked in. Drive to get Kate. Traffic ok actually. Saw earlier it was horrendous. Then collect Daire & .... David went home sick earlier. Oh.
At home Daire is very disappointed wine (my crippled older install of wine!) can't run pingu or jump ahead toddlers :( Earlier he was disappointed Liam's Kellogs game didn't run. anyway ... we do some violin practice after feeding ourselves. We doss and watch tv, play around.
I have a moment of revelation. (in evening/later) I fire in an ancient msdos boot disk and can see it boots up my restored C: drive as C:. Other drives more strange. Then I play with autoexec.bat remember "attrib -a -r -h" command get config.sys autoexec from C: doesn't boot windows then get more msdos.sys, some .dos files, detroit.bat THen! Windows 98 splash screen (with my graffiti!!) :-O First time in years that has been seen on our ancient pc at home. Splash screen goes away - autoexec lines scroll. Splash screen back. away. back. Funny messages rebuilding driver dbase,m ... Then in and poke around drives it can see (cdrom is FINE in windows (Phew!) it wasn't from the floppy boot before). Oh my backup of Drive I remember it was copied between partitions when I could mount both using floppy so long filenames all got ~%ified. SO things broken because of that (desktop, start menu, more). I fix some stuff ... run jump ahead toddlers (after change display setting to 256 cols!) YAY! Run quake, grand-theft-auto. Cool. Working.
Work on fault queue logging & processing. Also tidy up docs. prepare release notes, install and upgrade instructions. Fully specify filtering.
Surprised all perl gurus here and elsewhere don't immediately know of a perl generic queue module with pluggable backend that can be persistant on the file system or e.g. in mysql. Thread::Queue seems to be the standard threaded (or also not threaded) Queue. POE has Queuing stuff. There's a Basic::Queue. There is also Queue::Dir and together with Storable that would be good. Surprised slightly though there isn't something which combines them already .... though code will be quite simple.
#!/usr/bin/perl -w #use Time::HiRes qw(time); use Queue::Dir; use Storable; use Storable qw(store_fd fd_retrieve); my $rootdir = "/tmp/smsoutQ"; mkdir $rootdir if (!-d $rootdir); die "can't create queue directory $rootdir" if (!-d $rootdir); my $q = new Queue::Dir id => "smsoutQ", paths => [ $rootdir ], promiscuous => 1, #sort => 'sortsub', #filter => sub { ... }, lockdir => 'lock', #lockmax => 300, # default 300 sec anyway ; die "fail to create Q" if (!defined $q); #????The 'paths' parameter ("ARRAY(0x804c8d4)") to Queue::Dir::new did not pass the 'directory' callback my %oid = ( 'to' => "353867777777", 'text' => "hello foo", 'time' => 0, 'id' => 0 ); my $id = 0; $oid{time} = time(); $oid{id} = $id++; print Dumper(%oid); my ($fh, $qid) = $q->store(); die "fail to write to Q" if (!defined($qid) || !defined($fh)); #(ref $fh eq 'IO::File', "Proper fh"); #print $fh "Hello World $id\n"; store_fd \%oid, $fh; print "id $id, qid $qid, name:" . $q->name($qid) . "\n"; $fh->close; $q->unlock; $qid = $fh = $q = undef; # delete things my $q = new Queue::Dir id => 'smsoutQ', paths => [ "/tmp/smsoutQ" ], lockdir => 'lock'; die "fail to open Q" if (!defined $q); my $text; use Data::Dumper; my $count=0; $qid = $q->next(); while (defined($qid)) { $fh = $q->visit; #$text = $fh->getline; my $ref; $ref = fd_retrieve $fh; print Dumper($ref); #print "qid $qid, name:" . $q->name($qid) . ", text: $text\n"; print "qid $qid, name:" . $q->name($qid) . ", text: ".$ref->{text}."\n"; if ($count%4==3) { # if we handle q entry # dispose of qid entry in q file my $status = $q->done($qid); print "item rm from queue $status\n"; } $q->unlock; $qid = $q->next(); $count++; } # dispose of qid entry in q file #my $status = $q->done($qid); #$q->unlock;
Fionn is out in work gang Chinese restaurant in Stillorgan.
Work on adding tests for failed sms. Working all day on fault handling, adding & verifying automated tests. ALSO getting puzzling stuff talking to o2 server. Errors finally settle into "over quota" so it makes sense. Emails and sorted by next day.
Met Mike clambering onto a motorbike going to his driving test this morning.
Shhh. Might be a seekret. Not sure.
Keys in glove compartment. Driver door unlocked. Other doors locked.
Car beside Claire's (Kate knows where :) ) furthest down alley closest to creche.
(found bike unlocked so phoned Fionn)
Met Orla and Cian too just going into creche.
Congratulations on winning eBay Item Number 6923110284. eek. So I sign up to paypal and pay.
Daire likes school. His senior infants teacher gave him more homework than he's getting this year!!! :) This year teacher has expressly stated stop homework after half hour even if not done in letter home. His gang in our estate all cycle their bikes quite often and they've got some sort of seekret agent group with seekret stuff.
failed sms retry & queuing. Emails to people. I specify out feature required, break it down and also start work on it. One bug found if o2 sms servers fail there is a die way down in XMLRPC::Lite I change handler to log error, not die. Higher up in daemon queuing is handled (and will be handled more) and higher level logging of fault also done.
use XMLRPC::Lite on_fault => sub { my($soap, $res) = @_; # we log error, #later we notice nothing returned and handle fault logging further #print STDERR "xmlrpcliteon_fault " . Data::Dumper->Dumper($res) . "\n"; #print STDERR Data::Dumper->Dumper($soap) . "\n"; print STDERR ref $res ? "result fault detail:" . $res->faultdetail : "soap transport status:" . $soap->transport->status, "\n" };
earlier useful thing, how to control XMLRPC::Lite (or SOAP::Lite) debug at runtime
my $xmlrpctrace; if ($self->{debug}) { #$xmlrpctrace = "transport dispatch result parameters headers objects method fault freeform trace debug"; SOAP::Trace->import(trace => 'debug'); }
This is a new feature request though there is manual support for fault sms in smsengine now. The best place to do it is in smsengine. It will require development and test. If we add feature we should specify exact requirements on the "vartiable length retries". What range? Range is configurable?
There is limited support in smsengine for fault scenario now. Smsengine keeps faults for manual processing here: /usr/local/smsengine/logs/smsqueue_fault The smsqueue_fault file is not tested for scenario where o2 service is unavailable SO I cannot be sure the logging of that particular fault is successful. Add logs to bugs so we can reproduce the scenario. This smsqueue_fault must be taken and using test/o2xmlrpcout.pl sms may be sent from within script or by hand. Syntax errors in messages and invalid mobile number errors also appear in smsqueue_fault file. These may be disregarded after manual review. This smsqueue_fault file is not currently protected by locking so user ideally will shutdown smsengine, mv smsqueue_fault for their processing then restart smsengine.
If we do feature it means need to make the fault queue multi-process access safe. And within o2xmlrpcout.daemon OR using another e.g. o2xmlrpcfaultretry.daemon monitor fault q and implement the retries.
ALSO specify feature to restrict services and filter incoming sms depending on shortcode used and keywords.
in work, look at bugs, make some diary, stella in, kathryn what did on fri to stella coffee

I was poking on ebay and signed up and actually placed a bid.
Boat's still there. Moved a bit over. We rig her up fast enough there is a bit of wind to sail with. Kids in boat as we roll her down slip. As water approaches Kate looking at it (and just Daire with her in boat) gives a trepidatory squeak but we reassure her. She's a bit surprised at us all trundling down with this then then clambering into it. Sits quietly beside mast opposite Daire wathing everything. Was wondering what crazy Daddy & Mummy were up to for a bit and was very quiet. Then was happy out. I make sure centerboard is down first thing. Sails up. Off we go - kindof with wind (but no wind) through moored boats. We head out into harbour. Bit more wind. Fionn one side, me other, kids front. Tacking out. Low wind but little nice breeze outer harbour.
Loads of little and bigger boats sailing and motor. Boats heading same direction we give way a bit. We see rowing race start. Nearish sandycove Dalkey we're all hungry. Think about landing but we're sailing calmly enough so Fionn doles out sandwiches and drink. Cheese and chicken for kids, with mayo for Kate. Salad & cheese & mayo or chutney for Fionn & I. After lunch & drink Kate needs to wee! eek! Into bailer, very neatly assisted by Fionn. Then tack out and along by coast and find ourselves beside a race, lots of sails going our direction.
We goto Dalky island, see seals, park boat in past other boats tied up. Out we get. Meet Alex. I go back a few times - for water, for Daire's shoes. When I get up to Fionn & Kate Kate is crying lots having stood on nettle. I'm in bare feet and have seen them and have been watching out like a hawk for my own feet. I take Kate and she's still crying quite upset. We quickly wander up hill. No dock leaves? Although some I see quite small close. I gather some likely specimens and rub in making juicy on bottom of Kate's foot and that does quieten her. I'm dying for loo so wander ... wander more and sneak down out of sight. All time very careful of nettles and my bare feet. Rabbit holes by cliff and on paths round the place. Get back different direction last bit hopping from rock to rock. Last one tshirt off to get nettle out of foot way. We go higher up martello tower, Daire in. Me after. Then round the tower. Fionn further up but really tricky for my feet. Take photos. Daire gets nettled ankles/side of legs (no socks) and panic/cross runs across long grass. I juicy leaf him actually find small dock leaf plant too. We head back to boat. Lots of people up/down the paths. I prep boat - not much to do. Then all in and squeeze out round boats by grabbing rocks & seaweed. Then row clear. Then up sails BUT .... augh! Disaster. main halyard has travelled all way to top of mast. We drift. Try tie oarlock top oar and hook it off but actually it's jammed tight, Someone motors over to offer hand tows us over to yacht and boathook frees halyard. Sails up but v little wind. They tell us they'll be going back soon so if tow they'll help. Thanks. :) I row with sails up. We go close to rocks and yes. With just wind there we're not moving. Water roiling and sputtering tidal streams/wind/waves meeting? Another nice motorboat person (all seni-rigid inflatables) comes up and "tow?" so we say yep. throw him bowline ... he's not sure about making it fast ... but does so after away from rocks. Then Fionn steers, Kate beside her. I take centreboard up first, Down after while tired blocking water sloshing in. Daire up front. I hold boom out of my & Fionn's way. Amazing ... with engine noise motion Kate drops off asleep. Towing with towrope one turn around mast was better kept bow down. Our bow really lifting up. Fionn in back Kate asleep and steering can't move. After while we feel wind, set sails, they almost feel like sailing. Alright though ... guy motors slowly brings us ALLL the way to marina! In harbour we gybe still being towed.
Fionn sails us in, round corner I take tiller. We're back in 19:00 Drift in beautifully. Guy with boat catches us. I step out. Move over. other person brings us trailer. People are being so nice! :) Hey! :( trailer cushions (back ones) gone :( wtf??? feckers. Anyway. Daire out. Carry over. Bring boat alongside ... Fionn hands me Kate. Then out herself. Daire holds bowline. Fionn brings Kate up. Sails down and boat onto trailer with Daire's help my buoyancy aid cushioning where cushions gone and sharp nails sticking up. Daire & I haul boat most of way up slip. A young guy grabs front of our boat and helps me pull her over to our trailer. People again all day are being so nice. Kate is sprawled out on back asleep on boat beside ours. Lucky again car we had forgotten to get parking ticket. It's lonely in car park. No clamp no ticket. Fionn brings car over. Dismantle, tidy up boat. Out water. Cover on. Fionn puts Kate in car, she wakes & cries briefly.
back late we grab Golden Elephant Thai Chinese. Fionn stays in car. After ordering Kate needs loo so we leave Daire and go few doors down to pub. Lovely loo there ... mens thing being used, handicap one free. Beef in black bean sauce, Chicken cashew nut, special curry, kung po duck, two fried rice one boiled for 30 euros. 5 mins wow! Bring home and eat with beer/apple juice/water Eating 20:30. After dinner Daire & Kate go upstairs and ready for bed themselves.
Me very foggy 1am bed. Daire crying 1:20 ? Dunno why leave door open bit more. Then 2ish Kate crying. Bed wet. So lift her on toilet and dry her. Change top but she doesn't want pants or nappy. Me cross I leave her into Fionn who minds her. I goto spare room, shift bedclothes & stuff off bed.
imagining things then sleep! ohhh sweet!
Kate & I head to butcher's. We get bread & milk & newspaper as well. Home Daire wants lolly, get it from party bag in my coat from Aedin's Leixlip road party last weekend. Fionn gives Daire trump cards. We play & I lose very fast every round. Friends in paddy & Conor. Problems reading some of the attributes for some kids. I hear Daire banning the use of the "Score" and total lines! :) Lolly lost & I'm cranky over it.
I cook bbq. 3 burgers, 3 chicken, 2 steaks. Cook cook cook. Prep potatoes and carrots and brocolli too. going to do salad but just no time. Serve up. Daire eats all meat. Bit of potato when more burger is offered! Kate likes chicken, not burger today. Eats loads of carrots. Sees me chopping up Daire's potato and goes nuts about her's. Didn't quite firure out what she as asking straight away. Chomp chomp. Nice. ahhhh.
I run collect Daire & David. We head home. Christopher is in so David goes in home. We cook pasta and feed our faces. Daire changes clothes. Head into work. No machine for Daire. Stella's is locked. Root password not easy to guess. Don't want to shut it down. Daire has my mobile. Plays games then my machine while I go out to topupclub people. I come back in Daire's switched desktop and is stuck :(
Home we go. Fionn & Kate there before us. We've dinner, relaxing evening. I bring Kate to bed I think. Read her story. ANd another. And another ... She falls asleep quickly when I read to myself. Finish Harry Harrison's Homeworld book. Which Fionn has been simoultaneously reading. On couch with Daire Fionn reads 3/4 chapters of Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory until Charlie FINALLY finds the golden ticket.
Loads of stuff on tv I end up late in front of it. Umm .. Flashdance is one thing. Food. Drink. Fall into bed.
Fionn calls. I come home 17:30. Daire these evenings always out with friends on bikes. I meet him again cycling on road. Kids do just cycle out on road without looking too well. Everytime I meet them I'm telling David & Joey & Daire too & Liam and Alan to watch out for cars as they can't see and sometimes don't quite realise how wobbly they are. They flock together so that's a good survival method. Fionn's going out with work gang to Chinese in Stillorgan. I cook something, feed self and kids. Fionn heads and I round up kids and get them off to bed.
Computer is on from earlier and I fish up dev stuff. Make a cvs repository and put palm stuff into it. Then palm template project I test - it works, I add stuff. make MusicScreen project. Also then change keepEupE Makefile and ... AND ... it works!!!! Hey! (also I removed debug so .prc smaller.) So I had compiler bug before and I played with compiling in makefile and broke it and forgot I broke it and every time I went back since was puzzled. Now in cvs anyway so I can roll back in future. I have a feeling I did go over a limit (code jump limit?) at one stage so might have to figure something out if I hit that limit again in future. Satisfactory now. I have MusciScreen and keepEupE must publish on web make available. Then improve. And do other dtmf/music/game/map apps.
busy busy home 7? Fionn has waited for me. We all eat together. kids going to bed
Would you like to try Poolbeg? It's easy to find. Go for the toll-bridge. Turn right towards the chimneys before getting to the toll. Follow road left around (easy to get puzzled and go straight as roadmarkings are hard to see) Roll up the windows (as you go past the sewage treatment!) Then just follow the road all the way out ... there are a couple of places to launch from at each car park. The first car park has a bit of flat grass. Easy access to beach at a few places buit rocks to clamber over if you rig up in the wrong place! :)
oh! the uk hydrographic office have changed their website
Fri 27 Aug LW HW LW HW 02:21 09:09 14:52 21:22 1.2 m 3.6 m 1.2 m 3.8 myou've got to register ... 7 day predictions free but looks like they want to make more money on other predictions
There's a nice (and free) tide prediction tool that I've very old harmonics for Ireland for ... BUT .... xtide faq Q: I live outside of the U.S. and my location is no longer supported. What happened?
A: After a legal threat from the U.K. Hydrographic Office (UKHO) and the subsequent discovery that country-by-country permissions are now required to use harmonic constants (the data needed to predict tides), all of the data that arrived via the International Hydrographic Office (IHO) or the Table des Maro?=es des Grands Ports du Monde (TMGPM) were removed from the harmonics files in January 2001.
Back in the old days, the collection of hydrographic data was done almost exclusively using public funds. The resulting harmonic constants were treated as scientific results, published, and distributed on request from an international data bank. But in the late 20th century, a wave of privatizations occurred, and harmonic constants became the intellectual property of the collecting agencies.
You wouldn't think it possible to "un-publish" data that were distributed with considerable freedom at one time. Nevertheless, the international data bank was abolished, the Table des Maro?=es des Grands Ports du Monde was withdrawn from publication, and I was coerced into removing the associated data from the harmonics files.
I would be interested in finding out does the uk own all the tidal harmonic data for Ireland? Anyone on the list have an idea? I must remind myself to email various government or political groups. TODO: email Irish ? marine.ie ? others
Big heap quality email triggered by getting release note template we must use. It's a Microsoft Word doc! Augh. Requires test plan so ....
POE concurrency - well hm. alarms & timeouts needed connections dunno something went wrong with one reading and design in head of smsengine (for features and bug fixes) And writing test case needed to test multiple connections where one connection holds up all the rest. POE alarms versus delay QC shutting down session or part of session? dlrcoco water is off also perldoc perllexwarn perl faq use inside if(??) { I got back to this and sorted it out beginning sep. use evaluated by precompiler so conditionalising it doesn't work. Have to find way into package to set what is needed at runtime.

Then he up dressed and glues self to tv again. Kate up a bit crusty cross but slowly get her dressed & breakfast. Tracy calls keys for next door. Alarm goes off. Phone Fionn.
We got a piano this morning! Our neighbour getting new one and has given it us for almost nothing at all. (except of course us being such lovely people y'know! :) ) We've to find out it's history as they got it from a recording studio so lots of .. .er ... maybe not so famous irish celebrities (old fogey celebrities!) have played it. Gay Byrne and Phil Lynott Thin Lizzy. It sounds nice - big 'n old. It's got a notice in it saying it was refurbished in 1956!
kids invade and stay a bit when piano comes. David & Joey and Aisling. We're in good time for bus this morning. Drop K to creche and cycle Doolin.
o2sms still working! whew! Parse reply from xmlrpc. Talk stella about interface and wrapping it up as server.
Quick catch up on a couple of emails. Plan to go to Daire's Pine forest Art exhibition this afternoon. Mary's Canada photos up on web. write this diary entry and few last week
Time to RUN! Go meet Fionn lunch at S3 and go see Daire exhibition.
In morning getting up & dressed & kids and making lunches (make sandwich for Fionn too) takes time and we end up rush for Daire's bus and miss it!!! But BIG bus sees us. Turns AROUND. Comes back, waits in traffic light Q and waves at us. Turns AROUND AGAIN! And picks up Daire. Very very nice of them. Fionn sends me a lovely mail thanks for sandwich.
In work after a few weeks of solid pounding successfully send message to o2 pretend server and get success reply back. Got password for the cert in morning. Worked out how to tell perl XMLRPC::Lite where stuff was. Send XML-RPC message to XML-SOAP server first doh! :) Yay oh yay! xml-rpc formatted correctly and all cert/keys for https correct.
Downstairs. Kids happy playing. Daire puts on coffee. Microwave dead so I heat up milk in saucepan for cappuchinos. Make bread with jams and cheeses.
Do stuff in garden. Load windsurf gear on car. We goto Dollymount. Wind seems lots less. I get a couple of fast blasts in and wind picks up at end. Slogging lots but fun. Mellow. Nice. After windsurf & kids &* Fionn play fly Kites. Daire rides bike. Meet Trinh and Brian just as we're driving away. Car dance. Park. Back to their place for visit. I'm STARVING. Have cup of tea and nectarine. Trinh makes kids plate after plate after plate of sandwiches.
Damn l8r b4 takeaway suggested SO no food. :( On way home though see chipper and spar shop REALLY close to Eoghan & Mary's place. Fionn brings kids in. I order some fish & chips & burger & curry chips. Get milk & bread & ham & ... in shop. Pick up family. Wolf burger, then fish. Fionn & kids have chips. Home. Finish food. Kids bed, stories. Gear off car.
To town by the Luas. 10/11ish Kate cross doesn't want to go in buggy, wants to push? But we want to get to northside.
Arnotts first. Runners for Daire. Try on 1 pair, then up to kids section, get tickets, get measured. He likes runners with lights! There is tv playing video. Daire watches it. Kate half watches but likes wandering round clothes shops. But she has a sticky lolly. I follow Kate round mostly look clothes a little. Fionn looks at clothes alot and selects for Daire for wedding & top Kate too. Then upstairs. Kitchen stuff. It's very hard looking at stuff with kids. Pots and pans and teapots. Fionn looking at flat plasma tv too. Coffee maker for Aedin. Kate needs the loo so I take her ... down the lift. Over, up escalator. Q in the mens ... lasts a while .. just 1 person in front of us but ... FINALLY ... we go and we're fast. Back up. Daire happy looking at tv. Kate a handful. Buy stuff and OUT.
Epicurean? No tapas place. Order food, juice, glass chilean chardonnay white me. Lots of food. I worry. But no need. Steak baguette and chips for me. I gradually pass most of chips across to Daire. Kate has plain pasta. Likes it. Fionn caesar salad. I help Daire lots with his pasta + redish sauce.
then across road ... and kids want to come to bike shop!!! So. Fionn heads off by self. We take buggy and some bags. Walk in crowds then to bike shop. Daire finds big rally bike helmet to try on & kate tries on normal bike helmet. No problem bringing lock back but says I should oil it more. I did oil it but yes, now I think axel grease would be good and other protection. Also get football pump attachment, puncture repair kit, mountainbike punp attachment.
On way back by fruit stalls. We get 2 punnets grapes and 10 plums. Nice lady gives D & K a plum each. Thay do look lovely. Red inside. We goto Chapters book shop. We're 10 mins early (time to meet Fionn 1[45?]:10). There a bit reading books and Kate needs the loo! We leave Daire minding bags and across to loo in epicurean food mall place. When we get back Fionn's just arrived. I run look 2nd hand books. No chocolat. Find Stephen Baxter book. No pullman new or old. Back btween new & old book look. Buy books. Back to southside & home luas.
Brian's stag on night. Fionn going to Miki & Tara's BBQ. Fionn got Rita to babysit. We clean house after coming back from town. Kate into pyjamas, Daire not. Bring down TV from upstairs. Rita comes and we're both still home. Fionn's watch is wayy slow. She doesn't want me to cycle in. When I head in Kate roars crying. Tired.
Cycle cycle into town nice. Park. Cross road. DOH! Not Turk's head, it was Stag's head! So I unlock bike again and walk it through slow pedestrians carrying awkward coat. Hurmm? Where is Stag's head. Round block and find it right. See Odessa cross road. All way back in dark back room of Stags head. Just about enough seating space for arrivals. People buy me guinness as part of rounds. 1.5 In Odessa another beer. Rocket salad, plum underneath with duck and cheese to start. Small but VERY tasty. Lamb main course. Adrian gets Rioja red. Someone gets round of more beers. Again leave lotrs of a beer behind. Up to gaiety. Listen to bands - talk. Jeremy/Jerry? Adrian. William. Maurice. Hugh & Eoghan. Paul & Paul. hummm. 2 more? oh well Brian. 1 more ? Cycle home, over m50 roadworks last bit, see a scramble in a night watchman car but nothing happens. Get home 5am. Getting bright. Drink. Grab stuff to eat. Up. Sleep.
Fionn oh it's 8:20! Up she gets. Kate has been in bed with us a bit. She has sleepy hair/eyes but very happy face. Fionn gets her dressed beautifully. I groggily dress & up. Daire in pyamas up & Kate employs him reading her books.
Down to make breakfasts (Fionn gets Kate weetabix) and I make lunches. Kate & Fionn off in car. Rice crispies for Daire. I finish Kate's and ready brek (found over fan last week thought we'd none) + porredge(sp?) for me. We're in good time 9:09 (left 9:17 both other mornings and were well in time). Bring out containers and pick gooseberries from the overloaded bush. Possibly half broken off by oil tank crunching over fence has left strong roots producing too much vigour and loads too much fruit now on one side left. Assumpta & Tracy pass by. Daire starts basketballing (and mad game in his head). Yoike! it's 9:27 by broken microwave!!! Leg it out of house, onto bike, up hill, along, right, left, narrow road, down hill. There we are. Wait a bit. See some of same people pass/going to shop. Bus arrives. Bye! I zoom-cycle crunching bike up the new but horrendously unconnected and dangerous cycle lane with sharp kerbs and gravel where there should be nice smooth ramps. Right across road - avoid today the juddery broken cycle path. Lights red nip onto path briefly to cross half as pedestrian. Then into traffic. Right turn down road along. Yay. Oh my lock is all internally rusted and real hard to key open/locked. AGAIN. Specialised bike BRILLIANT I love it. But specialized lock not good. This is the second one. Looks like rain gets in from all angles - along cable into lock - as well as in keyhole. So just use outdoors during day wears it out internally with rust. That'll teach me! Maybe not.
WilmaFredWilma.pl and perldoc perlsyn (stella was wondering how to break/continue/next/last/ out of loops but then it didn't matter but by then I'd realiased I didn't know this in perl and it had bothered me previously so I read the docs a bit and experimented a little bit) started yesterday evening. finish this morn. stella was making sure abusebot didn't have anything nasty about people b4 she went homeit didn't.
spasibo (rod sets as subject on #doolin) $(B'3'a'Q'c'Z'R'`(B (spasibo) $(B'2'e(B (Ru) Bolshoye spasibo! "big thanks" not in dictionaries I look up initially ominglot.com russian alphabet interesting p is like greek pi, C is s.
Meeting with Ray about salary 18:30ish. Fionn calls on mobile in mtg. Grand chat ....
some kannel stuff, distracted a bit by greek as roaming rollout greece with no testing and have found greek terminal sw doen't print extended chars other countries (they're in greek!) Mapping was specified a long time ago. Stella & Kathryn are pointing them at docs. Sean is on xchat and likes it. communication! yayy!
get into & good fixes and LOTS of tests for mops internet auth fixed making sure session overlap php keywords doesn't blurk. silly unfosticate language/lib. fix up wikkle errors other places. lots tests also chat stella know how it works & how supposed to work. evening finish up cvs checkin stuff talk stella mops internet stuff nearly done how it works review. Email to ray about salary. Fionn wrote up for me and I phrased some things my way.
Home 19:30+ kids eating chicken drumsticks - fionn marinaded mmmm something sweet. Big greeting two kids. Mashed potatoes and beans also for dinner. Kate has more ... and later after I finish she has more again finishes beans. tup of tea.
Aedin calls, with tennis gear - I get kids upstairs & to bed. Fionn read 1st two chapters of Roald Dahl's Danny the Champion of the World last night so we read next - Danny's Dad makes star kite, makes fire balloon. Danny mechanic. Then into our room. Kate has wombat "I think alot and I dig alot." story. Read lying on sheepskin on floor beside bed again. Space is quite tight. I goto loo and when back Kate is in big bed and asleep!
Puter is on and Daire said his freeciv game was always now loading and his character was dead but puters chars were still alive :(. So I start fixing script. Need to grep script for human dead player and move it out of way if so. I also realise less savedgame.gz gunzips before showing content! And can less savegame.gz |grep stuff | sed | etcc...
Aedin home and good talk fionn baby & extension. Plans to move out - Emmet start November - 4/5 months -> March baby due. So maternity visits not in this house awkward. Birth in Holles St. NICE fast community midwives room not other OR at home hopefully. Coming towards end pregnancy will be work house cleaning & putting back in order. After new baby will still be stuff to do in house possibility builders still there.
Hungry! Grab YUM chicken & red pepper & mayo sandwich. CHOMP! GULP. Teeth - ohh I need shave! Bed. Fionn mfrngh. Facing my way eyes closed. Lamp low down I read a bit. Consider Phlebas.
s3 bbq I follow Kate round lots. Daire has huge fun. I talk a bit to people but not too much actually. Food good nice. Drink some wine. Bring toys all back to s3 before home.
In work mon-wed I think (check TODO) get sms api info from aplhyra. o2 sms. AAAAUGHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Proprietary interface. Initially api docs which don't quite complete the picture. Next day more details on connection. XML-RPC or XML-SOAP. Not SMS forum's XML-SOAP thing. something else. java sample code. BUT regardless. meetings with Aimee and Paul Kelly and other with Ray. Looks easy to interface to. I send estimate to Kathryn. Aimee heads away holidays back to USA Wed/Thur. More docs thur/fri but getting mops internet bugs out of way. Very simple bugs. But takes a day to get stuff (test env) running on bakunin & look reproduce 1st one and fix. Next day as well as change also auth completely not working. Combination of things. Code changes to fix end up as simple one liners. (next week)
sunday - drive back from limerick afternoon grand traffic a while slow Monasterevin lashes rain for a bit getting petrol I try 3 pumps before working, call in & ask ??
goto see Shrek II with Fionn & Daire cinema
go shopping - suit stuff for me trousers talk talk fionn good in end shirt tie trousers
Bring kids meet Maureen & Ruth & Gordon in pub. Kate & Daire out across street play big footpath beside river. Skateboarders think Kate is cute.
Breakfasts - ready brek for Daire, weetabix for Kate. While I finish making school lunches. Then get tights and jumper and shoes on Kate. Daire goes down for David ... and is a while. I weed, Kate with me. She drops soother all way under car! Windy lovely sunny scudding clouds. Chilly though so Kate into car. Daire runs up. Finally David sauntering up 9:12 by car clock.
Vrmmmm traffic looks okay by IMI so I take a right and we're late enough so that it's okay down to St. Olaf's. Drop lads late. Then Kate & I on straight ... but meet traffic, U-turn - past Ace tyres. S3 no traffic. Kate heads in happily. I raise saddle and unlock bike. Bike against wind except for last downhill.
In work reverse engineering libdes mostly trying to see how data should be packed into blocks. I dunno why we need the same cipher as long as we can decode the different ciphers to the original text. (but of course we can't quite do that yet)
todays non-results :-7 1. jamesc's head is fuddled now so time for home again 2. jamesc's still no help to you :-7 (so far) 3. libdes can kindof produce same cipher for moo and 12345678 cmd line: des -E -h -k 3132333435363738 moo moominmama.moo cipher: 0000000 4128 a457 422f 80d7 (kindof! 2byteswap matches) matching up with Ciphertext in hex (len) : 28 41 57 a4 2f 42 d7 80 (8) needs code edits to not pack ramainder of block with random 4. internally looking at libdes doing the DES can see similar bytes after it does IP after IP(L): 11100000000000001110000011100000 (E000E0E0) after IP(R): 00000000111000001110000001100000 (00E0E060) libdes debug output (l for left, r for right) IP l=e0e000e0 r=60e0e000 so ... NOT the same, read one byte ass backwards and they are the same. from there the DES rounds data diverge BUT this is down to difference in how the initial packing is done so hopefully I can figure out the right packing tormorrer. there's nothing too useful below so you can stop here really but anyway ... (below has more detail on 1 2 3 and 4 above.) messed lots but one thing was going somewhere ... (not exactly where want it to go!) I was looking internally at libdes doing encoding of moo using key 12345678 (as I wanted to see how it puts bits into blocks) 1st block this cmdline does it for libdes: des -E -h -k 3132333435363738 moo moominmama.moo in libdes in des.c instead of packing remainder of moo with random must make a change: //buf[l++]=random()&0xff; for (i=7-rem; i>0; i--) buf[l++]=0; it did this to last byte buf[l++]=rem; HUH! This be weird. (was using initial block 6d 6f 6f 00 00 00 00 03) (where 00 is random of course)) (was that an error in libdes??) I guess it's allowed to pack it up with random stuff but !?!?!?!! so changed that as well to: buf[l++]=0; NOW des -E -h -k 3132333435363738 moo moominmama.moo hexdump moominmama.moo 0000000 4128 a457 422f 80d7 (kindof! 2byteswap matches) Ciphertext in hex (len) : 28 41 57 a4 2f 42 d7 80 (8) why 2 byte swapped gnnnggg? But anyway all that's nearly irrelevant. compare: [jamesc@betty] ~/cbe/libdes-4.01/$ ./des -E -h -k 3132333435363738 moo moominmama.moo des_cbc_encrypt in=6d6f6f0000000000 l=8 k=? iv=0000000000000000 des_encrypt l=00000000 r=006f6f6d IP l=e0e000e0 r=60e0e000 key s=bfffe050 round 0 l=07000707 r=07070003 t=08052c40 u=bfffdf60 round 0 l=05f83443 r=07070003 t=703c4440 u=d3af4c2b round 1 l=05f83443 r=8aaca837 t=d00fa714 u=b5d0786b round 2 l=093535b9 r=8aaca837 t=48beaed3 u=c210a41b round 3 l=093535b9 r=83ff143a t=4053370b u=f17d2da5 round 4 l=379c6a8c r=83ff143a t=3ccb95d3 u=830f0c26 round 5 l=379c6a8c r=c8a5191a t=87dd8a38 u=9b84fa90 round 6 l=16f488e3 r=c8a5191a t=f0da1d21 u=ec61898e round 7 l=16f488e3 r=e3c465a5 t=39c7002a u=8a683877 round 8 l=816749cf r=e3c465a5 t=5ea08efe u=7788d535 round 9 l=816749cf r=753155d2 t=c426fc30 u=b94be91f round 10 l=dfc76f03 r=753155d2 t=17db8d71 u=2951b512 round 11 l=dfc76f03 r=088a00ff t=b11ceedc u=9fab0fe3 round 12 l=0155eef9 r=088a00ff t=44e43003 u=1c9a641f round 13 l=0155eef9 r=f88c5b11 t=d8d1eea3 u=6561aa99 round 14 l=7444c099 r=f88c5b11 t=f380f5f9 u=c8181771 round 15 l=7444c099 r=51d11333 t=97687c41 u=84d08cb1 [jamesc@betty] ~/cbe/libdes-4.01/$ hexdump moominmama.moo 0000000 4128 a457 422f 80d7 0000008 later I need yet to look at key packing too I think also. compare with: [jamesc@betty] ~/cbe/libdes-4.01/$ ../des/bin-crypto moo 12345678 (selected bits) input(left): 00000000000000000000000000000000 (00000000) input(right): 00000000011011110110111101101101 (006F6F6D) des_encrypt l=00000000 r=006f6f6d so left and right seem okay (but of course could be backwards or byte ordering different depending on implementations) after IP(L): 11100000000000001110000011100000 (E000E0E0) after IP(R): 00000000111000001110000001100000 (00E0E060) IP l=e0e000e0 r=60e0e000 so ... ANd allow me to see how libdes packs it's bytes before DESing them.
> if you look in the README file it describes where it comes from. yup well yes :) it was more of a rhetoric question I've never read cracking des but I went over it very quickly yesterday. Will have to sit down and read more. > > <jamesc> it's kindof .... um .... I don't quite know whether to poke at > it with a long wobbly stick or something less conductive > > what's wrong with it exactly? the code is much more readable then the > libdes code - it's not k&r c for one. > It is lovely code and maybe alright we could use it. But it is code used more just for illustration of how DES works and I think because of this it has some disadvantages if it were to be used in a product of ours. (sorry about this ... it's just IMHO and I think about things way too much! I'll get back to trying to make it work just after this) Oh the disadvantages: mainly ... I think it would not be used normally in any application so would lack the comfort usually that comes with open source (where code is used & hence tested lots and any problems are hammered out). This comfort is particularily important to have with encryption code as there could easily be something in there which compromises the encryption. ? As it's not used elsewhere as a real tool it lacks also the bit we're trying to do here. The interface to do the block chaining. Block chaining shouldn't be too hard to implement but again it would be much better to take code already working & tested. Also it's an illustration of an ASIC and there is no optimisation for software. > <jamesc> isn't libdes licenced alright? could we use that code? > > libdes - which istr is what is used to implement des in openssl - has an > advertising clause. if we have to use it, we will. but i'd rather not. > i don't really trust alphyra to follow that license. not to mention it > will require us to say, "we added this code from an outside source to > do do your security," which might lead to long, annoying conversations. > also, this code is nice in that it drops right in with the rest of > our code with no effort - i reformatted some lines to save paper but > otherwise i left it alone. Mnnnggg. Yerrs. I definately (even with saying all above) you know how things work and I think you've a good idea of what we can get working so I think it is a good plan to use this code. Big testing comfort ... it certainly will have been tested loads by people who developed it and I'm sure loads of projects would have experimented with it. We don't need particularily fast or secure code (it's just des 8 byte key!). > > <jamesc> don't have it now but I diod poke at it before > <jamesc> but I will pound away more tomorrow at EncryptDES > > as i said in the README, i think the problem lies in how i feed the > EncryptDES and DecryptDES routines. if we have to modify the EncryptDES > and DecryptDES routines then there isn't much point in using this > library. Yes it is in the "block chaining" as in packing of stuff before passing it to EncryptDES. So I was hopefully going to poke at libdes. Try to understand how it does it. See if it is different from your code and hopefully by the end of that process we'd have the interface to EncryptDES that we need. > > if you look in cryptography.com/search.c, you'll see a usage of > DecryptDES. i suspect i'm creating the key bit field incorrectly - or > the in_b/out_b buffer. I didn't see the search.c thing before! From the past and poking yesterday as far as I can see there are several ways of packing the blocks before doing des encrypt (there are as many as you can imagine but most would make the encrypt much less secure). Most involving tlas with b's and c's in them ecb cbc :) > > i've tried several variations here: > > key_b = (bool *)malloc(56); > i = 0; > while (key[i]) { > for (b = 0; b < 7; b++) { > key_b[(i * 7) + b] = (key[i] & bits[b + 1])? 1: 0; > } > i++; > } yep - I've wrapped em fwd & backwartds & mixed up so at least I was poking at the right thing. I also tried running gdb and catching the openssl just before it got into the encrypt (need to gdb as root) run openssl-des moo 12345678 break DES_ecb_encrypt but I got lost in pointers & memory debugging without code and variables :-7 AND ... the cipher came out differently too!!! gah! could try again but will leave off that for now .... Anyway. Will get back to hacking it try understand packing of the block now. Don't worry about my reservations as I do have wayy to much mad debating going on in my head with whatever I do. *ahem* :) James.
I have wet weather gear, put on pants. It doesn't really rain on me.
We head off to Stillorgan for my Birthday. Fionn heads back home as she forgot to leave golie gear out for Clare. I'm reluctant for her to leave us but .... :-7 WEe have fun! Daire & Kate & I. First we walk along the path on the shopping centre. Kate runs! Daire goes ahead. Kate looks real cute pounding along. It's windy still. Not sure where to go - gates pulled most of way over - most shops shut. We go across road discover the attica cafe place is open 9-6 and closed for holidays anyway till tomorrow. Then down to the cinema and loiter there a little. Then back to shopping centre crossing at pedestrian lights. Onto ice-crewam van ride. Until kate wants to do wee wee! She RUNS off towards probably shut shopping centre toilets. I persuade her and we go to Eddie rockets. Spend our time in loo. Then get table and have just finished ordering when Fionn arrives. YAY! Good timing.
Atomic burger for me & chips. Chips & hotdogs both kids. Milkshakes all of us. Water & fish for Fionn. We have too much chips between us all. I wrap up leftovers and pocket them (nice leather jacket).
Kids & I walk over to leisure centre. Fionn drives. Inside clamber on car game, other games. Oops motorbike game just Fionn. Then Fionn helps Daire, me on other bike. Kate wants off! She wanders far away and we have to search. Fionn finds her. Daire & I play airplane game. Then skateboard. me first then Daire then we mind Kate (who's wet pants & visited loo with Fionn) while Fionn has a skate. Time to go. WAH! Fionns handbag is lost. I get kids in car. They're hungry and eat chips & hot dogs. Fionn's bag is behind counter. Whew!
Home. Kids up to bed. Read Kate story. She wants 6 more! Start on Matilda (Roald Dahl) for Daire (I've never read it maybe I think). Myself other night finished Blackberry wine.
Downstairs (TV upstairs last few days) we talk. Fionn has made cappuchinos. I get guitar. Play she's a good girl then sonny then I hope that I don't fall in love with you, ... after a bit Fionn says should learn Jake the Peg and Scarlet Ribbons. I dunno Scarlet Ribbons at all (at least I think) Fionn finds it on Sinead O'Connor CD. Not immediately I write down notes. Then figure out chords that work. Write all in palm then on a page. By end I practically know it. TODO: put scarlet ribbons lyrics, notes & chords on web. It's half past midnight me going to bed. I'm a bit wakeful. Maybe the coffee. Sleep after a while.
wussy hippy philosophical stuff: I believe in ... open source fair trade sustainable use of environment being useful & helping for no apparent reward (there is always a reward so I could never say no reward) not making a fuss (which seems to be not how to get things done) not taking things too far I don't believe in ... God or gods. I do believe in peace, understanding, tolerance. How do we then reconcile living in a peaceful rich society? Fight to keep it that way or run away?
It pours rain hometime. No wet gear so I get SOAKed. Fionn with two sleepy kids in car in driveway. Shower. TODO (get from email)
More phone callignhole for me than usual lookign for John's address.
Windsurf for me evening.
Wind's good. 5m sail. I get creamed don't manage a turn at all whole night.
Straps swinging really long & flappy.
Getting tired ish but fun.
Choppy waves ... turning either way too much wind or too little.
Also trying waterstart mostly too little wind!? :-7
So don't manage much of anything but fun.
THe yerman back to windsurf there advice on going FASTER.
Hops up wall chat to Italian chick too.
Type up relais todo and main issues and email. Stella asks do some javascript for Alphyra Internet stuff. Takes a while - install files,
Sat meet Lucia botanic(al|o|) gardens. Call to surfdock on way back. New (2nd hand sail). Fintan I think. Randall too.
We head to town (real early it's like 11:00 and feels like 15:00! Look at all the free parking near zoo! goto Phoenix (Fionn uisce) park interprative centre. then deer then playground
Daire had no violin yesterday - staff meeting. Balmy SW winds (very gale-force blustery) but real warm outside. He was switchboarding up & down path yesterday evening. Kate was cross & wanted a petit filou b4 dinner but was distracted by going out for a walk on the green. We picked up rubbish (which Kate REALLY enjoyed). And saw a big fluffy doggie which Kate was not so sure about. She was wrecked - bed & sleep 19:00. She's a bit of a cold at the moment. Was singing in the wind on the back of the bike this morning.
He finds crossbar quite OW! and bumpy :( Nice enough day. We get to St. Olaf's GAA. We're late (almost 10:30!). Loads of kids groups hurling. We fish out helmet and hurl for Daire. I say ask guy in white & green stripe. Daire days he'll ask head coach. Then he marches off and quickly gets slower and shyer and saunters and slips into group. (of white and green stripe guy who has just been distracted by parent! DOH!) He fishes equipment for girl and off to girls group. then back to his group. Going s l o w l y. I leave Daire still not having whacked anything.
Cycle to Stillorgan. Hmmm. Make my space among traffic. Park bike. Drop in Fionn's watch for 10 mins for battery. Go look for milk frother - nope. Do find 5 plug extension get it for doolin. yai! 6:50 for battery change. Go to Dunnes, get some tops for Kate - only 2.50 and 3.00 euros. Go to bookshop Get envelopes. Cycle - not time to go home and get car SO go to GAA.
See Daire playing Gaelic. Looks more like rugby! Also see him get kick in face on ground. He cries & is consoled & gets bakk and legs it & on rebound gets goal. A little bit more play before finish. He sees me, is pleased, waves and runs very fast. I praise him telling I saw his goal. He tells me bunch of stuff and hurling and I tell hime didn't want to be late so bike.
We roll up his coat as padding. Works much better. Passing by roadworks a car comes out - looks like someone in for a goo. We head in too for a look. No security around. All the way up the road going directly towards our house actually. Over half of bridge. Earth on far side and diggers working. Then up towards Sandyford. Almost all way but there is a security guy at far side so we head all the way back. We go to butcher and get stuff. Then finally home.
Shopping comes just a bit after 13:00. Milk frother broken so no cappuchinos. In fact no coffee!! :-O Notice this later when getting slight headache. Dose with strong tea. Fionn organises us and We pile selves into car and go to Aiken's village new housing development showhouses. Interesting. Back home for 16:30. Aideen calls. We have tea and bread/biscuits.
? some time today Play guitar Puff the Magic dragon, Hallelulia (Leonard Cohen). Daire likes. Conor hears them and is wondering I think. I play some songs while Aedin & Fionn talk in kitchen.
WAHIE! Fionn yells at 18:30 just after realising time. Starts cleaning the kitchen!! Hey! She tells me she told me to do it. HEY! I object and she says okay she didn't TELL me but she did drop a hint. So anyway I missed it. BUT anyway. Chop fresh bread rolls. Cheese/ham on one, jam on other, orange also for kids. Then up & get dressed. Then drive to collect Ruth. Call to check her brother has house keys in Maxol service station on way back. Then bye bye. Kate little shy of ruth but smiling. Daire & Kate watching TV when we leave.
Vrmmm we see someone at bus stop & pick them up. A German girl, she's an au pair for doctors in Sandyford. Fionn & her compare kids & countires. I forget myself slightly and end up driving towards Christchurch a bit overshot from Havana which would be a few streets over. We go right and drop girl very close to Sptphen's green really. U turn. Up Wicklow Street. In and park in weird crammed no pay parking place. Stop by bank to extract money. We're 5th and 6th to the party. YAY! Mochito I start with. Fionn water.
Barry and Aine (Audrey?) she's student in ?UCD? town planning & stuff. Aine was in Music Network. Also arrive Kate and Orla in Music Network. Kate's doing part time economics & law. Orla off to Paris. People exchange seats a few times. We've big conversation about travel - Europe and Paris and Malaysia and ... AND cooking and food and shopping.
Yum food distributed to rightful owners as per Stella's spreadsheet. Paella and meatballs for me, Fionn lentil & spicy sausage soup and chicken kebabs with chilli dip. Pinchitos selection of starters sharing.
Mike's been snowboarding. Weight & ctrl on front foot! I have a minor epiphany. Yeah oh like ski-ing keep weight forward. Mike says surfing ctrl on back foot. Windsurf too (that's the part in the water most weight on). Weight forward ski/snowboard to increase control with front foot. I tell him about my 3 snowboard days. One in Austria I'd almost forgotten myself. Snowboard down front hill. Then back up top. Must collect Daire. Snowboarding down from top. Nasty long hoppy unstrap trudge flat bits. THEN arrive bottom of mountain WRONG run!!?!?! Augh! Lift back up but next lift would go ALL the way to top!!! So cut across up a road and across slopes by foot. Then down slopes that are too flat really and eventually just in time to collect Daire.
Down other end I catch up with Fionn and all talking about sex in the city and the final episodes. I want to go back to geeks!! :(
Later geekiness with Mike & Tim from ESAT (setting Mike up with DSL and server in webfarm). I tell of my php & apache exploits causing kernel panic. Also Mike & what doing in Doolin & looking for people & tech talks delayed.
Downstairs we go. Book talk I get a few things I MUST write into palm and look up. We've to leave just as Tim buys me another Jamacian herstelt in ENGLAND red stripe beer. Whoo I'm toasted. Home we get. I drink lots of water. Fionn back after dropping Ruth. Bed.
BUSY BUSY doolin no time check email or anything. php for alphyra intranet mostly. Finish off and get hierarchial menus working. ALSO have some *FuN* bring down server. I'm building urls & reformatting in php so I can read them. Oops don't notice all spaces etc. are now in url. I click. Mozilla whirls and .... does nothing. "Hmmm" I say. Stop mozilla. Back to server and vi is not responding. Interesting noises from around room. "Hey is bakunin okay?" "Time for coffee!" Process runs wild uses loads of mem and goes until kernel panic. After fix that cause SAME thing using url with 1 field blank. This worrying as easy enough to do on real server.
To test should really reproduce on less critical machine. Probably can fix code so as not to do it in specific cases. Probably can in general fix it using apache resource limiting. BUT we don't want this intranet work apparently (though we seem to be most popular choice to do it by dint of technical ability, speed of delivery (2 dev days this time) and expense (we should charge LOADS more!)).
Rush off to collect kids from school. Traffic is really thick and slow moving. David runs out excitedly coat unzipped flying off starts running away towards gate I go "woah wait will you get Daire?". They're happy chaps. David's cars were confiscared though as he played with them during work time. We go in to ask Miss Molloy and she won't give them back. :) :-O :)
We head back off up home. David goes home. Take in bin. Hi Noel. Then to shop. Daire not sure about different shop (maybe he wants chips?). Get grapes for Daire. Baguette for me & apple & banana. White bread sandwich with ham and egg for Daire. Also yop.
Everybody is in work, Ray too. Daire uses windows laptop. Try find games he had fun with before ... but can't ? Find others. vnc is running so I can help him. Also others take a look. Daire does drawing with paint prog. Finds some good games. Goes for coffee with us, plays some foosball. I get all my email for last few days read/deleted/replied to. Finish up & test fully intranet menus. Type up & send intranet issues to Aimee. We mean to head home 16:00 but it's after 17:00.
Collect Kate. Still about 10 kids in creche. She's doing jigsaws and doesn't see us immediately. Then does jump up & run over. We go out and wander round car park and under trees. We find a small tree shoot, underneath it's a conker with root shoot and branch up. We find another. Also looking at other stuff around. Looks like hollow conkers and flesh of .. a conker? half eaten with skin nibbled off. ?? Dropped by a squirrel and lost ?? And a hazelnut.
Drive home. Not much fresh food in house I cook spagetti and stuff but ... make a mess. Too much flour. Kate & Daire have spagetti with tomato juice. And Kate has some of Daire's grapes. And I have Daire's remnants of sandwich. Violin practice? Probably. And TV. Maybe. Getting ready for bed. Read stories. Fionn back just as stories finish. She comes & says night night to kids. Kate settles & doesn't come in & out of bed 10 times!
We have tea downstairs. Talk & tv. Fionn feels why are we not moving down the country. I take her up wrong and feel I'm being grilled so go defensive but they were rhetorical questions. whew :) Using Fionn's laptop I dial up & do superquinn shop on internet for 11:00-13:00 tomorrow.
Okay. Do transaction with my original setup on bakunin. Pin sale success. Whew! Don't quite realise my fix I wasn't sure of only knew it fixed fake modem has been a success right now.
Time to burn cd with mops rse/cbe and files and utilities. That goes grand. Waider prompts me.
17:00 augh panic. last test of mops rse dials up & receives response BUT doesn't successfully sell pin. Lck file left in dirs! AUGH, There have been MANY cosmetic changes and in particular changes to modem init/send/receive routines to make them consistent. Was 0 for success for some, 1 for success for others. -1 or 0 or other numbers could be others. I head home anyway. Foo. Fionn going to soccer.
I'm so stressed. I tell Fionn over dinner. Makes me feel a bit better. then she gets all stressed and tells me go back to work. no no! I get kids to bed grand thinking about it whole time. Fionn brings her laptop from work and then back to soccer. I dial up and am able to build and host test but not test on windows laptop. I fix a few things that look wrong. Test on fionn's pc (windows 2000) and am able to fix fake modem problem where it failed on modem receive as return code had been changed and code checking it expectedc old values. Not fully able to test with real modem as Fionn's is winmodem. I do find it on com3 but cannot set it in v.22bis properly so not confident fixed is perfect.
Bed tired, still anxious feeling but I sleep fine.
On top we have juice break & orange & other. Kate is not steady on her feet on the rough uneven ground and especially on top of mountain where perspective is funny. Down we go and Fionn close to boys getting them to go slow. After shoulder boys take off and get far ahead Fionn & I chatting. Fionn heads on & Kate & I make our way. On smoother bits Kate & I run a bit and catch boys too. See Kate has cut her lip or tongue? :( But she's smiling (but a bit cold also - she hasn't got much exercise out of this exercise)
To: Fionnuala Subject: snow & stuff Ciao bella, Left a message for ecobaby for same order + wipes. Ecobaby number in dect phone actually. Kate actually put on her coat this morning ... she said "bike!" hopefully :( Lads liked the snow a bit. Kate & I went in & met Sylvia. She said bring change of clothes for Daire. Will try and remember. Met Miss Molloy too and told her she'll collect Daire tomorrow. Saw the houses but didn't want to stay too long. Hope you didn't FREEZE this morning. Again I saw your gloves as we left - only a different pair. Kate wore your hat to creche. www.mvhsdrama.com/70sFashion.htm www.talent99.freeserve.co.uk/pages/70s-fashion.htm www.uossnaps.co.uk/fash_fst.htm www.inthe70s.com/generated/clothes.shtml www.stuckinthe70s.com/fads.htm www.letsgoretro.com/shop_submenu_fashion_page.html hmmm :) darn my parka I dunno where is? I think in Cobh being used as yard coat. www.comnet.ca/~rina/fashion.html or could lean more towards punk maybe :) or Goth! oh look: Stuck in the 70s - Friday, March 23, 1973 Tom Sawer was on tonight. It was neat. Wish I was Huck Finn! When we go to Missouri we're goin where they made the movie!
Home to Fionn & kids. Fish & dried pea & veg stuff & potatoes yum. Shopping arrives. I have a beer. Into sitting room relax a bit. Tell Fionn over dinner and relaxing a bit about Doolin meeting. and
Bring kids up to bed. Daire way faster than Kate in finished brushing teeth & I just got pyjamas on Kate. We read Fix it Duck for Kate. Then Daire's pig book (babe). Then Peter Rabbit for Kate. Daire off to sleep - lonely he says. Kate heads off into our bed. I bumble around on landing taking clothes from clotheshorse and folding them. Kate never appears out wandering. Great.
Fionn is on laptop downstairs (newish for her in work). Doing CMM assesment checklists in Excel. I tidy kitchen a little. Play guitar - newly downloaded songs worked better last night & Yesterday evening I had marked chords that worked and wrote down others I got to work.
Make tea, chat Fionn
No heat in Dundalk. Fionn's mum has terrible cold. Much hot water bottle making before bed. Also electric heater plugged into adaptor then into plug. Adaptor smells, brown patch developing. We swap it out. Later & tomorrow I take it apart. Insides were broken (red bit stopping kids poking wire in while nothing plugged in). This has melted and maybe been cause of other damage BUT contact right up touching white plastic (now brown) probably also cause. ANYWAY. Up late sitting room, reading newspaper, half watch TV. Chat - Fionn's Grandad interested in security - Sheila brought priests computer to recycling centre in Dundalk. Later Gardai talked to her wanting to know her connedction with Dundalk. Someone had bought PC, gone through letters & stuff on hard drive and story in newspaper about priest sending supportive letter to other priest in trouble over child molestation. Anyway. We get into proper data deletion and nuke/wiping.
Middle of night Kate cross. Me cranky get her up & into bed with Fionn. I head in with hot water bottle to small room. It IS freezing .... but warm up under covers. Morning sleep in till nearly 11. Toasty warm.
Park. Bring Kate in. Marie just answering phone when we arrive. Avril there too. Coat off Daire. He's smiling and just looks calm and happy. Marie gets him toast and Kate & I head away. We go fast enough (no wind) road, cycle patchs, road speed bumps. Meet creche carer getting dropped with her kid. In Kate goes, I say bye. Vrmmm ... to Doolin.

don't see stuff when they close their eyes?
Well.
I do.
First it is afterimages - taking quite flourescent usually red/pink/purple also brighter to yellow
other colours. That's it right now. Also happens doing something for a long while.
Close eyes and visally see as well as mentally involved still.
e.g. coding with particular editor
(turbo c years ago was yellow on blue windows)
(my emacs I keep yellow on green)
(driving see the red lights in front, white lights oncoming and the central line)
Imagining a red square - actually usually I don't think about visualising and
actively visualise things. But eyes open or closed I can get a red square.
It's a bit of effort (not too much but is effort) to fully bring up active image.
Easier if I con't concentrate on active visualisation.
e.g. drawing or diagramming stuff (which I do badly :-7)
I will have non-active visualisation.
Putting boxes and circles and arrows and lines on paper is fun and useful too :)
I keep notepad beside me.
Track todo lists, scribble on it if I want to think about something, doodle
draw, diagram. Math or hex or puzzles getting complicated go in there.
All gets joined with enclosures or connectors or markers.
empty box for TBD visually stand out.
Orkut's Kids, learning and computers discussion group is a bit interesting. Not too much other activity there as of yet. HPL High Power Learning Sounds a bit dangerous at first :) fun in learning, environment, montessori rollercoaster.ie I think I must make a kids & edu & computers web page. Daire told us that their principal Mr Murphy was asking for software for computers. So I was tellign Daire about open source & free software. Today this evening he said he told Mr Murphy. I think the principal may just have been asking kids to get Tesco computers for schools tokens. But must send them an email and find out who minds the computers and if they have any need or interest in some help.
I've been looking at software for Daire & Kate and also at use of computers in schools - how to, what is needed, what not to do. There's lots on the web. I should collect it (the info) and my thoughts. Important I think that apps/games be evaluated as appropriate. (both suitability for users and teachers as well as ease of use and suitable for puters/hardware they will be run on). Then install & support is needed. Ideally done properly (Quality!).
me cycle shop for food now. yesterday walked. world world
Cycle cycle to S3 creche, bike seat in car then cycle onto doolin. Bit better today. Doc-ing of crypto module operation. bit more diarying and work on web page on torture of scripts Walk to shop with Kathryn Stella Kevin. Mmmmm baguette butter beef cheese coleslaw. Banana. Change water thing. Home before 18:00.
Conor is in visiting. Fionnuala is cooking fish & chips & beans. Kate gives be big hug and holds on. I manage to take off coat and lift her up again. Lisa calls to collect Conor.
Daire practives violin. They have started to learn B. (on A string - 3rd string - as in 2nd highest string) Our practice of violin during week was getting quite low - one session on Sunday often. He & Fionn say he is behind others. So anyway. ABA ABA fine but BBEE he plays F#F#EE (finger on wrong string). I get him to "drill" on BBEE (though he plays it total of maybe 4 times). Much encouragement needed. He's tired I guess. But I think he has it now. Hopefully practice in day he will have that down.
Fionn brings kids up to bed. I .... reading ... then follow. Daire has cute blue new bedside light. Yay! Fionn gets Daire Narnia - the Silver Chair and we resume our read after hiatus of a few weeks now. The children and Puddleglum witness the knight's insanity when tied into the Silver Chair and free him with some reticence after he exhorts them in the name of Aslan. They find out he is Prince Rilian of Narnia, son of King Caspian, the reason for their quest. Yay!
Fionn reads story to Kate ... and then lies down beside her.
Downstairs I'm tired. Pick up things a bit. On couch, strum guitar a little, read magasine. Miss most of news. Miss Congeniality on. Enjoyable ... watch while reading.
Reading Dr Dobbs Journal. Stuff on XP and use on project end up thinking hey I know exactly what this guy has discovered. Good article alright, agree with pretty much all says. Also on refactoring - then huh ? Realise it's refactoring software. Interesting. Yep. Have done that lots with emacs macros and also simple sed or more complex perl. But not comfortable reading lots of articles pushing pieces of software. Interesting to see what is going on in Windows and Java and C++ and C# and J# and .NET development world
Was reading on web electronic voting on web. Australia looks good - eVACS. Open source. Dunno what licence but presume it is not free. Saw something on news government have been answering questions about 4 million euro government contract paid to company with connections (someone on board?). Wondering about that figure. THEN. Find eVACS also in Dr Dobbs. ANd it's price tag $125,000 That is a bit cheaper! (very cheap?) Is this system usable by ireland? With a few modifications? More transparent, open, proven.
Fionn comes down very sleepy. Cross I didn't call her & keep her from sleeping too long. She gets porridge. Becomes nice to me. I'm hungry. Have banana. Dunno what else I want to eat. Other stuff a bit later.
Telling Fionnuala about VxWorks and Mars Spirit Rover. Read wired article few days ago. Had read of spirit rover communication problems and the "heartbeat" and other dumbed down explainations with interest reading between lines and laughing. Then this article. Full first have saying how everything is fixed now and working and brilliant and THEN they say
because we're using brilliant mission critical software software used in jet planes and space and ... software by Caldera ... VxWorks.AND (mentally) I laughed out loud and fell off my chair). I had been mentally picturing their OS rebooting, poking at it with basic command line, trying it again, getting crash, dumping memory, trying to debug all the way to MARS. I hadn't imagined that my mental picture of VxWorks commands and dumps and boots and torturous download over slow serial connect (as we didn't manage to up UART default speed or get ethernet boot sw download working yet) was EXACTLY what was happening.
Not that VxWorks is a terrible OS or any more or less stable or good than other choices. They do have reasonable collection of tools and IDE type effort thing is always good. But it isn't wholly stable IMHO. And is grown a bit and has lots of bits and not _that_ easily documented. And their support was not good. And of course they are the Microsoft money grubbing, other OS buying and suppressing equivalent in the embedded world.
But anyway. *ahem*
I go upstairs. Kate is standing almost asleep on landing with her soother and blanket. I put her into our bed. I shave (BADly needed), brush teeth, gargle (not sore throat but feeling I could have and have a bit of a sneeze). Kate back into our bed. I read snow crash in bed in spare room. Fionn up - puts Kate back into her bed a few times. Eventually stays with her. Shortly I finish snow crash. Back to our bed. Hoping maybe Fionn will make it in sometime. She does but later and it's early morning time. A bit after that .... Kate also comes in. Get her in my side behind me. She settles sleep grand I cuddle Fionn.
I put out rubbish, paper, compost. Get out bike. See Dermot getting kids into car. When I come back in Tracy is there. I get Daire coat on & bag & off to Dermot for lift to school. Kate shows Tracy books. Reads books while I get her clothes off, nappy on, clothes on. Hat on & coat, money for Tracy then out we go. Show Kate how she can put on her coat. Lay upside down on ground, ... arms in then UP over head. Kate wants her pink bag not in my bag. We put it round saddle. Laura drives down road just as we go out. We pass her out of estate. They pass us leop road somewhere. We see them just going off roundabout. Lady in car asks us where is hospital so we direct her. Up road, park, Kate puts bag on her back and marches into creche.
Cycle on to work. As can see from diary entries am not being productive today :( Having many ideas want to do and to little time :-7 So for writing:
Home 5:20. There is still daylight out! Traffic down end of road jammed. Cycle along white line or over it. Many cars far out, all bumper to bumper too. It's not pancake Tuesday but we're going to have them. Katelyn is visiting Daire this afternoon too.
Home Fionn in kitchen. Kate concentrated on spilling out recycling toy - doesn't notice me! (she usually is impatient for me & greets me very enthusiastically) Daire & Katelyn bashing & bumping upstairs. Katelyn's Mum comes just as pancakes served. We have glass of wine. Kids eat. Katelyn doesn't like egg on pancake. I take over pancake making and make sweet ones for kids. Then ham & cheese no egg for Katelyn. Then pancakes for adults. One each savoury and then one each sweet. After that two more for me.
Bedtime for kids. Up we all go. Pyjamas & teeth. Read evolution earth popup book Kate. Read tugboat book for Daire. Kate jumping on it a bit but we don't actuially fight. Fionn heads to soccer gewtting lift from Clare, collecting Eimear. Then lights out. Kate screams doesn't want to go in her bed. I bring her back in maybe 4 times. More. Tired, she comes out & heads into our room and I leave her. Puter is on.
I go down & read Snow Crash.
Fionn back.
We have tea and finish pancake mix cheese+egg+parsely from garden.
Then bed for us ... only I read a bit. And end up reading alot.
AND then just as I'm going to bed Kate appears out.
I carry her back in & lie beside her to keep her happy.
Long time later I get up & go turn off pyuter & go to our bed.
Having slept in clothes.
Mmmm Fionnuala is cuddly.
5:30 Kate arrives into our bed.

Phoam home after 17:30, home Fionn cooking, Kate has soother and blanket. I carry Kate round, read book, D starting homework but his head hurts. He joins dots and I say food will give him some energy. He has to draw some special things of his in bag. Dinner peking pork chops, potatos, cauliflower. Kate likes mash potato with milk on and flowerets of cauliflower. Daire likes pork and some quorn with red sauce on. Fionn gives him grief over vegetables. He has to name 3 - peas, potatos (not really acceptable but here ok) and can't think of another. He eats potato and little more meat. Then homework he's still unsure. I prompt him remember santa and other presents. He remembers a few things then I help show how can draw his helicopter. He does well there. Then train track. He starts, I draw bridge & tunnell and train engine off tracks. Then bike, I don't draw - he does wheels, then Fionn does handlebars and saddle and rest for him. He finds that difficult but wants to just copy. Proportions are dfifficult. ANYWAY. Later when he is abed I see he has coloured them.
We go upstairs and Fionn helps attach front face of new shelf unit. Dowells in, glue on, Kate underfoot with buggy. Put shelf unit on our bed waiting for glue to set. Screw in screws holding front face on.
Fionn pyjama-es kids & teeth brushed. I finish Calvin & Hobbes book Daire has had for last four weeks from school library. Now he'll bring it back. He says this morn they missed library but David was allowed go up and get new book. Daire reads something to Kate. Then lights out. I insist Kate goes to bed beside Daire in her bed. But she objects. Each time as she emerges from room I pick her up, hug her to me, bring her back and put her down. She's very cross kicks and screams and scrambles out as fast as she can. Draw duvet across in her way and close door mostly hoping to tire her out. Maybe ?6 times? Last time Daire talks to her and she goes quiet. Fionn heads off to yoga (after searching for blanket & mat).
PG+ videotape. Kate out again. in out in out in out I lie beside her. Uncomfy and tired. She's quiet but still fidgety. Nice but after while I gat up, say goodnight and out. I go in and hammer the back board onto the shelves. Expecting her to appear .... but she doesn't! Puter on, I play winmine and tickled by trying out dos/doze progs. photoshop runs! I don't try loading image though. Also before it's finished starting I close window and crash. mshearts - can't find card dll. gta runs s l o w l y. kyodai mahjong :) sound working grand too! notepad yes, wscript?, pbrush.exe yes, can't save (I've /mnt/C as C: mounted read only probably confusing stuff) tc.exe or daffcount.exe don't seem to work rocket librarian does.
Fionn back from yoga. Put on tape of PG+ program. I have grapefruit, she has porridge. After talk I can't remember Daire's 1st words? steps? OR Kates? Daire "Uo ohhh" and "Oh no!". Daire steps when just back from holland unpacking stuff???? Kate ? and steps over a couple of weeks. I think first in Immalee in Ashgrove visiting John & Carly. Then not for a few weeks but a bit in Dub, Limerick. Words?
Up and finish put shelves in shelf unit. Fionn has made me tea and sandwich. Fionn to bed. I off lights downstairs. Puter wine little more. bed
