We bought Kampung boy, a book of cartoons in Malaysia, by Lat. Lat lives back in Ipoh now I think. Very good. Funny. Calvin in the jungle! :)
In Australia lots of books in kids room. I really liked the ?? not really ?? Artemis Fowl style. No. Not style. Magicians in London. Child brought up mediocre civil servant magician. Makes enemies of Gov Minister magician. Breaks out. Author ? DOH me. ANd other book by Artemis fowl author. And other smaller ones. AND a very nice book of music for piano I nearly learned one exercise of. I think I wrote it in palm. But palm dies and lost all :( when? near end of hol. bummer :( (it's a tungsten T and done that 2wice now ... warnings not work perfectly?)
Visit to city centre few weekends ago. Illustrated Terry Practchett - something with Conan the Barbarian in it. The Last hero I think. Also Oscar Wilde book with short stories and fairy tales. Daire gets a book about Fix-It-Duck. Aedin later buys him another book we looked at - Sitting Ducks.
Have also recently finished book by Ian Banks, Walking on Glass. Steve, big slow guy, paranoid (anyone would be with the aliens heat-raying his face and lazering from car wheels the whole time). Lives with loads of books stacked on floor, helmet. Narrator meets girl and falls for her but she ... >:) And meanwhile in a strange castle a pair play games in an attempt to free themselves.
12/07/1999 Primo Levi, The Periodic Table
01/07/1999 Sophie's World finished after a few revisits. (started before Holland I think? Sophie's World Jostein Gaarder
Terry Pratchett: Small Gods again
15/03/1999 Blight by D.H. Melham. An enjoyable read, it has a strange feeling about it which I liked. The atmosphere gave an aged feeling to the home and I was taken by the mystery of the setting, probably not at all the intent of the author but strangely enjoyable. This location, the strange garden creatures and the mix of indifference and passion result in a gently compelling read.
